Toronto Fashion Week: Speaking Through Your Style

$

Monday was day one of Toronto Fashion Week, and I was there with a curious eye to how fashion inspires thought. I wrote a post in the past that talks about how significant fashion and a lasting first impression can be, but this time I wanted to know how fashion and style can impact the way we perceive the world around us.

And boy, the stories these designers told through their collections made me feel like I was in a sandbox and someone grabbing my fingers, spelling out the answers to my questions.

Enter Sid Neigum. His collection was dark, abstract, and expressive. Each outfit literally told a story of its own. One woman strutted the runway with long, sharp spikes coming from her skin, another with a wide, spacious gap between her chin and the material of her dress. A third appeared, wearing a thin, black blouse that must have had less material than half a pair of mesh basketball shorts. Her bare breasts looked as much part of the outfit as the material itself.

Walking the runway, these women were expressing their life at a certain moment in time. In other words, the look expressed to the world their understanding of it at that specific point in time.

Picture 1 (right): The sharp spikes, to me, illustrates that she has developed a layer of protection to fend something(s) off. She feels the need to stand up for herself, that the world is not always a pretty place. That behind every white swan must be a black swan ready to take over. The something could be internal things like, fear, shame, and embarrassment, as well as external things such as, a terrible past, an illness, or an unsolicited circumstance.

Picture 2 (middle): She presented a look that seemed to hide her from direct contact, as if she was trying to distance herself from the world. Similar to the previous model, circumstances have led her to creating internal mechanisms to adapt. However, she takes a passive approach and almost shields herself from the world by hiding behind this veil she has erected. Her view of the world again, is not so optimistic.

Picture 3 (left): This look is daring. That leads me to contemplate what kind of person takes risks. It could be someone ambitious, someone who feels they have to put themselves out there in the world in order to get what they want back from it. Imagine a person cannon balling into the ocean of life with everything they have without fear of how they may land because they know this cannon ball will be epic. The other world view this woman's look presents is that of someone who feels entirely naked in terms of expression. She is not afraid of being blunt, bold, and descriptive in how she feels. To this person, diplomacy would simply be a waste of existence.

I never in a million years thought I'd "learn" something from a fashion show, but what I picked up today is a reflection of the thought, story-telling, and creativity of the handful of designers I had the privilege of sharing an audience with today.

I'm interested, how do you express your worldview through the way you dress, walk/talk, and carry yourself? (Comment below, I'll be sure to respond.)

Why We Should Get Rid of the "Plus-Size" Label Altogether

$

Sorting through the sparkle and fringe of Forever XXI, it's easy to get lost. Sometimes, I pick up an item free of beads or odd colours, checking the price tag for a potential buy. Then I look up and see that big sign. That sign that says "plus-size." That sign that screams "I'm different from the other clothing in this store." That sign that makes me back away slowly, pretending I was never there to begin with.

I don't feel that my body is properly represented in straight sizing or plus sizing, as neither properly serve me -- I'm that frustrating in-between size thanks to proportions that can go either way or neither depending on the situation. Walking into one-size fits all stores like Brandy Melville and partial-clothing type stores like American Apparel tend to result in a rant that just earns me eye rolls from the people I'm shopping with. Sometimes I find a winner in one of these stores, but I usually leave them in a huff.

My favourite line to say in times like these? "I can fit one boob into this."

By separating two body types into "plus-size" and "straight size," the fashion industry is telling us that we have to either identify as the same size as the general public or not. According to retailers there is a plus-size and a straight size. Sometimes, a petite size.

"Plus-size" is defined as "clothing for people of a size larger than the normal range." But the average size of a North American woman is between a size 12 and 14. Yet, plus sizing starts at size 14, and in the U.K. at a size 12. This is where the problem lies. If retailers are going to separate their "normal lines" from plus-sized ones, shouldn't it be the other way around to truly accommodate for the average size of woman? But then again, "plus-size" generalizes body types as well.

Labelling sizing in this way separates us rather than unifying us. Fashion and body types are not black or white.

The problem with plus-size clothing is that, like other clothing, it assumes that every size means specific proportions. While a large bust size may prevent someone from shopping straight sizes, the smallest plus-size may hang disproportionately because of a smaller stomach or slimmer waistline. Female sizing may have started to account for plus-sized women who otherwise would not be able in straight-size clothing, but it's yet to account for women's different proportions.

The amount of times I've tried on a top and hoped that there was a little less fabric in the arm, or had more fabric in the bust area are countless. Plus-sizes are supposed to accommodate for those who aren't flattered by straight sizes, not idealize plus-size women as having the same proportions.

Mariana Leung wrote for xoJane that "full-figured shoppers could be very busty, pear-shaped or muscular. One fit model cannot possibly cover every body shape in that size range." She hypothesized that if designers want to service women of all sizes they need to efficiently allocate their resources. "Collaborate more with influencers who represent your target shopper for styling and fit feedback," she wrote. "See them as allies, not a battleground."

A lot of the time plus-size equals tall. My 5'3" frame begs to differ. I want a top that fits my bust. Not a poncho.

In 2012, Ryerson fashion professor and CEO of the Ben Barry Modeling agency, Ben Barry, conducted a study in which he showed 2,500 women, between the ages of 14 and 65 and ranging in size 0-18, an array of mock fashion advertisements where models of differing size, race and age all wore the same dress. According to Elle, the study revealed that women are most likely to buy clothing worn by models who reflect their bodies.

Alex LaRosa, a self-proclaimed "plus-size model who's visibly plus-size, told Huffington Post Live that plus-size women aren't represented in plus-size lines. "You're using sizes eight, 10 and 12, when sometimes the stores don't even start carrying the clothes until size 14," she said. "You're telling women, 'You want to look like these models. This is what you should look like, but it's never going to happen.'"

"Women on the street don't relate to all this talk of plus-sizes, and it creates an 'us and them' mentality within the industry," size 16 supermodel Crystal Renn told The Independent in an interview.

It's an "us vs. them" in the world where there is no collective "us," who share the exact same bodies nor proportions. More so, it's our common differences that unify "us." The size two with longer arms or size 14 with shorter legs are unified by fashion's inability to accommodate for different body types. Retail is forgetting that size differences also include proportions.

We need plus-sized clothing, there's no doubt in that. The world of plus-size fashion, however, isn't all bad. Some brands like BooHoo boast lines for plus-sized women that aren't just larger shirts or dresses. They are clothing articles designed to flatter curves and other positive attributes plus-size women show. Plus-size fashion isn't a problem, it's just a first step rather than a solution.

While having plus-size is a nice thought, it often fails to properly fit women who don't fit in straight sizing -- which would be less of a problem retailers didn't label these clothes as strictly for plus-sized women. It's the promise the label serves that it doesn't live up to. These labels make women insecure although they are arbitrary.

All bodies are unique. It's time to make clothing more women-friendly than petite friend or plus friendly.

If you have ever watched a red carpet event, tuned into an awards show or flipped open a fashion magazine, you have most likely seen the work of the talented celebrity makeup artist and photographer, Troy Jensen. Based in Los Angeles, Troy has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood including: Miranda Kerr, Jennifer Lopez, Iggy Azalea, Halle Berry, Nicole Scherzinger and Christina Aguilera -- just to name a few. His signature style is a radiant look that goes beyond the makeup and draws attention to the woman wearing it.

"Makeup is not about creating a mask; it's about enhancing the natural beauty of a woman," he says. With more magazine cover credits than we can count it's no surprise that Troy has become a go-to beauty guru for dozens of Hollywood's biggest celebrities. Troy is an artist who sees the person behind the face and who strives to capture the unique beauty of each woman who sits in his chair.

"All trends start on the couture runway shows and then it's my job as a makeup artist to make that look wearable for the everyday woman. For this look I became inspired after seeing the Dolce & Gabbana fashion show and its reference to traditional European beauty. I love paying homage to iconic Italian beauties like Sophia Loren and Monica Vitti who channel an effortlessly beautiful glamour."

The spring collection for Dolce & Gabbana features the new fashion "it girl," Kendall Jenner. Troy recreated Kendall's look on me (see below) that highlights: radiant skin, sculpted brow, thin, wing-tipped liner and a Bardot lip. Chanel products were used to create this look and we have also provided a shopping list of Revlon products that you can pick-up from your local drugstore to achieve this look for less.

Recreated look modeled by: Katie Zeppieri. Makeup, Hair, Styling & Photography by: Troy Jensen. Assistant on-set: Jarek Addison.

Troy's Step-by-Step Guide to Achieve This Look:
1) Prepped skin with the Hydra Beauty Crème Moisturizer to aid in moisture retention and give skin a healthy, radiant glow.

2) Evened out complexion under the eyes and around the mouth with the Éclat Lumière Highlighting Face Pen in #35 Medium. This product is a light-coverage concealer, highlighter and complexion-brightener all in one that provides good coverage without looking caked-on.

3) Applied Vitalumière Moisture-Rich Radiance Sunscreen Fluid Makeup in shade #50 Naturale using a blending foundation brush to create flawless coverage on the entire face and neck. This foundation is creamy and lightweight with SPF 15 making it a perfect daily foundation.

2015-03-24-1427216430-1254560-20150324_3.jpg

4) Applied Le Blush Crème De Chanel in #79 Cheeky to the cheeks using a medium-sized fluffy brush. The cream texture of this blush adds a dewy feel to the skin and the rose-bronze tint of this shade gives a natural, sun-kissed look.

5) Dusted the face with Natural Finish Loose Powder in #40 Dore Translucent 3 to the forehead, nose and chin. Used a small powder brush to isolate only the T-zone areas on the face leaving the jawline and high cheek bone un-powdered for natural glow.

6) Filled in eyebrows using the Crayon Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Brun Naturel #30 then combed brows and applied a clear brow gel to keep hairs in place.

7) Applied Ombre Essentielle Soft Touch Eyeshadow in #45 Safari to the eyelids, keeping close to the lash line and winging out towards the edges.

2015-03-24-1427216621-3618233-20150324.jpg

8) Lined the upper lash line with Ecriture de Chanel Eyeliner Pen Effortless Definition in #10 Noir creating a thicker line near the corners of the eyes.

9) Curled lashes and applied a generous coat of Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in #10 Noir. Applied two sets of Trio i-Envy Lashes by KISS to the outer corners of the eye.

2015-03-24-1427216676-4629172-20150324_6.jpg

10) Applied Rouge Allure Intense Long-Wear Lip Colour in #16 Envoutante beginning in the center and swiping outwards to the corners of the mouth. This berry wine shade is the perfect bold lip colour for spring because it stands out but is not too harsh on the face.

Helpful Makeup Tips from Troy:
• Use powder sparingly as it dulls the complexion and takes away from the natural glow that is unique to each face.
• If your face looks too wet or shiny, dab a Kleenex on the shine to help remove excess product and prevent creases.
• Dampen the eye shadow brush before applying the shadow as it gives more colour control.
• The ultra-thin pigments in the Chanel Rouge Allure lipstick give you control when applying the colour as it applies sheer but grows in pigment with each coat so you can apply the colour in steps.

Achieve this Look For Less - A Shopping Guide:

Watch Cate Blanchett Shut Down Journalist After Inane Cat Question (VIDEO)

Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett has never been one to shy away from standing her ground.

From hilarious award speeches to sassy remarks on the red carpet, Blanchett makes even the most mundane entertainment event amusing.

So on a recent "Cinderella" press junket (Blanchett plays the evil stepmother to the titular Cinderella), the actress lashed out at journalist Jonathan Hyla for a ridiculous question about the cat in the movie.

After the interview gets off to a rocky start with Hyla joking that he should have brought beer to the junket, Blanchett said to him, "I do not drink beers," and tries to steer the interview back to "Cinderella" and says "Let's start over."

It's a fitting response after an awards season that saw the promotion of #AskHerMore, an initiative that took a stand against the dumb questions being asked of actresses on red carpets.

The brunette beauty kept her long locks down and parted to the side, with just a little bit of curl on the ends. She was also sporting a gorgeous smoky eye and a nude/pink lipstick.

Thank you @houseofmackage for a beautiful show! What talent! ❤️Xx MM (full look by #mackage)

Looks like Rihanna might be giving supermodel Cara Delevingne a run for her money in the brow department!

The 27-year old shared a stunning photo via Instagram on Wednesday in which she's showing off a beauty look we know her model pal would approve of.

The Barbadian stunner is seen sporting a pair of the boldest brows we've seen in a while, and we absolutely love them (#browgamestrong). The rest of her beauty look features a sultry dark lip and just the right amount of smoky shadow -- it's like an intensified version of her "Four Five Seconds" look, which was equally amazing.

In the black and white shot, the "Unapologetic" singer is wearing an unzipped black leather moto jacket with nothing underneath (showing off her massive Phoenix tattoo) and a pair of extra long statement earrings.

Toronto Fashion Week: The Best Moments From Day 3 At The Tents

We're halfway through Toronto Fashion Week!

Wednesday March 25 marked the third day of World MasterCard Fashion Week, and it brought plenty of fabulous frocks to wear for fall/winter 2015.

Atelier Wonder opened day three with a cosmic-inspired collection that was out of this world (don't mind the pun). Triarchy followed with a complete change in mood, sending models out in a camp-style collection featuring custom patches and decals. Bonfire, anyone?

Malorie Urbanovitch proved that socks and sandals can look cool with a collection that drew upon Moroccan landscapes and crafts, and Klaxon Howl showed menswear can be equally as sexy on women as it is on men (also, we give him kudos for sending a model down the runway wearing his turban).

The most fun show of the night went to Hayley Elsaesser who drifted away from the typical dark hues for fall, and instead offered bold, colourful and loud prints (snake print is our new snake skin, just saying). The designer also wins for best soundtrack, playing some groovy tunes while models of all shapes and sizes (yes, diversity!) strutted their stuff down the runway. We're calling it -- Elsaesser's show will be taking the place of Joe Fresh and Target's dynamic runways.

Finally, Mackage closed the show with a sexy collection filled with leather, fringe, and fur. Guys, sexy snow pants do exist, and they can be found at the Montreal-based fashion house. Also, we want all of their handbags, please.

Colin and Justin Deal With Total Dock Shock

Hold it -- is it REALLY a year since last we graced the stage at the Cottage Life Spring Show to deliver cabin counsel to the wildly enthusiastic assembled audience? Fact of the matter is that yes, 12 months have indeed rolled by but blimey: it seems like 12 minutes. Time marches on, huh?

Guess it's fair to say we've had an action-packed year filming in Canada, the U.K. and Australia and, in that period, have reworked one cottage in Muskoka, and rolled forward to another (this time in Haliburton) the subject of our show Cabin Pressure, the premier of which we chatted about in these virtual pages last week. It's been a busy time, sure, but you'll never hear us grumble. There's little we like more than being busy boys...

We'll come back to ep two of Cabin Pressure in just a mo', but, before that, a little heads up about The Cottage Life Spring Show that runs from March 27 - March 29 at the International Centre in Mississauga. A combo of big names and big ideas, it's a compendium of pretty much everything you'll ever need to enhance your time at the cottage.

From gazebos to log homes and from barbeques to strip wood canoes, The Spring Cottage Life Show is a juggernaut of retail opportunity, fascinating seminars (hosted by industry experts), celebrity chef cooking demos and design inspiration delivered by respected TV names. Whether you already own a lakeside escape, plan buying a cabin in the woods sometime soon or simply want to add a little cottage flair to your current urban or suburban nest, this show will send you into cottaging orbit.

And this year it looks like being bigger than ever -- more than 33,000 attendees are expected, which makes it the world's largest cottage exhibition with an astonishing 550 plus exhibitors.

Fans of Cottage Life television will be able to mix and mingle with some of their favourite hosts. Confirmed presenters include Andrew and Kevin from Brojects, celebrity realtor Rob Serediuk, host of What's For Sale? and those pesky Scots, Colin and Justin (we're dying to meet them. They seem such lovely boys -- so cheeky, but so talented) who be popping up at 1 p.m. on Saturday to help you feather your holiday nest and amplify its value via design. And worry not, the gobby Scots will be illustrating their chat with a full pictorial 'before and after' session to inspire and excite. Expect inspirational imagery from both seasons of Cabin Pressure.

But anyway, where were we? Oh yes, our recent Haliburton purchase. And what's that maxim, you know: the one which property speculators everywhere spout ad infinitum? Hmm? 'Buyer beware'. Oh yes. Aware we'd chosen a cabin with more bad points than good, we hoped that somehow, just somehow, the dock we'd inherited as part of our chattels would be in better condition than it was. But no. It was rotten to the core. Dragged in and out of the water over the years it had expanded, contracted, cracked and peeled and was infected with both wet and dry rot. Not a lot going for it, really.

So we bit the bullet and started from scratch. That said, we did actually salvage a third of the derelict pontoon and put it aside for future use. Let's just say it became an integral part of our guest bedroom. Okay, we turned it into a glorious and dreamy headboard. But more of that particular upcycling transformation in a couple of weeks time. Stay tuned.

For today, we're focusing on the creation of that which turned out to be a celebration of floating dock joy. Being that we needed a new pontoon as part of our radical project conversion, we put out feelers. We spoke to several competent manufacturers but one, Interco Docks, stood head and shoulders above the rest.

Based out of Peterborough, the convenience factor was an attraction, although it's fair to describe the company's outlook as far from local. Manufacturing, as they do, literally hundreds of floating rafts every year, their product has travelled the length of Canada. So our assignment was relatively convenient, being that they only had to deliver 90 km's (by flat bed truck) and then 'launch' the dock from the other side of the lake to our waiting shoreline.

So what was our remit? Well, we needed somewhere to hook up the boat we intend buying ahead of summer 2015. And the dock needed to be sufficiently large so as to accommodate the sunbathing parties and late night revelry we intend hosting if the mercury's vertiginous ascent ever properly occurs.

And so it came to pass we started a dialogue with Ben Burrett (his Dad set up Interco Docks 25 years past) to outline our ambition. Fun stuff aside, we stressed that we needed a low maintenance dock. An L-shaped configuration, measuring 50 feet long and 30 feet at its widest, was agreed upon at which point production commenced in earnest.

Ben recommended outlining the dock in galvanized steel and, as a finishing detail, suggested sinking solar lights into the wood at various points around the perimeter. This detail alone gives the structure awesome presence during the evenings as the cute wee pin spots illuminate the platform and sparkle against Haliburton's inky skies.

Importantly, the dock was manufactured in such a way that it can remain in the water all year round. The only proviso being that its stability chains and anchors are adjusted before ice forms so it can move freely to cope with expansion and subsequent contraction. While the company offers a maintenance contract -- if the prospect of disentanglement is too much to contemplate -- be assured: the process is so easy that we (with little experience) were able to undertake the operation with ease.

Our new dock provides the perfect sightlines to the setting sun and, at the end of summer 2014, we enjoyed the spectacle on numerous occasions. Dressed, as you can see, with 'all weather' Hauser monochromatic furniture (visit their website for a host of inspiration) the vibe is very much casual dining/relaxing/sunbathing. We browsed the company's Toronto store, finally deciding on the set you see here, which we saw as a welcome relief from an abundance of generic faux resin furniture elsewhere.

As our dock was being built, we also started work on the first stage of the cabin reno' -- that being it's a 20 foot lift (a precise mechanical operation conducted by Almaguin Building Movers) to facilitate a basement dig and the creation of a brand new laundry, TV room and bedroom. See the 'jacked up' levitation and the realization of our dockside dreams in more detail during Sunday's nail biting episode of Cabin Pressure!

Now all that remains is to wait for summer 2015 to unravel. As it stands, our dock is concealed below several feet of snow. As anyone in cottage country will attest, the weather has been unforgiving -- nay, relentless. In the meantime we can only dream of the fun that lies ahead, spread eagled, as warmer climes make our cabin transformation worthwhile. To help us through the remainder of these colder climes, however, we'll be battling a path to the Cottage Life Show when the exhibition's massive portals are thrown open. Perhaps we'll see you there!

'Colin and Justin's Cabin Pressure' airs Sundays at 9pm on Cottage Life. The television network is currently in free preview.

The Spring Cottage Life Show is at the International Centre, Mississauga. March 27, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; March 28, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and March 29, 10 a.m. to 5 pm. cottagelife.com/shows

What a stunner!

Christina Hendricks star looked like royalty in a forest green ball gown by Zac Posen at "Mad Men's" Black & Red Ball on Wednesday.

The custom-made gown featured a full skirt and flattering scoop neckline, highlighting the "Mad Men" star's ample bosom. The hem of the dress was intricately detailed with hundreds tiny butterflies, making a dramatic statement on the red carpet.

The 39-year-old actress sported minimal jewelry and subtle makeup, save for a pop of red lipstick, to let the dress speak for itself.

But our favourite part of the dress? It can be worn two ways. Once the actress shed the removable skirt, the gown transformed into a sultry mermaid dress that accentuated her hourglass figure. Either way, the dress looks fantastic on the fiery red-head year old who never ceases to amaze us with her bold fashion choices.

By pairing this mermaid cut dress with her red hair, this look instantly makes us compare the gorgeous star to Ariel from "The Little Mermaid."

What we would give to be part of her world.

It's official -- Kendall Jenner is the new face of Calvin Klein Jeans.

The announcement was made by the brand on -- you guessed it -- social media.

The ads were photographed by Alasdair McLellan and styled by Melanie Ward, and feature the 19-year-old model (who's posted plenty of pics in her Calvins) wearing streetwear-inspired looks from the limited edition, logo-driven collection, which will debut at Opening Ceremony.

Her makeup is kept to a minimum, save for a bold brow, and her hair is wet and slicked down.

The brunette beauty -- who's also fronted ad campaigns for Marc Jacobs, Estee Lauder and Karl Lagerfeld -- is joined by male model Simon Nessman for a few of the shots (but let's be honest, Kendall's the true star here).

"Modelling for Calvin Klein Jeans is really a dream come true," Jenner said in a statement. "I've grown up wearing the brand and seeing the iconic advertising in magazines and on billboards featuring some of the world's top supermodels. To now be a part of that legacy is truly an honour."

She also shared her excitement via Instagram.

Just me in #mycalvins. Proud to be the face of the new @calvinklein #mycalvins Denim Series!

Jenner joins Kate Moss (whom she posted a pic of prior to the announcement), Brooke Shields, Christy Turlington, and most recently, Justin Bieber and Lara Stone as the face of the brand. Now all that's left is a sexy snap a la Kate Moss and Marky Mark with Bieber (after all, they did look pretty cute together in Vogue!)

The collection will be available to shop at Opening Ceremony on April 15 and on calvinklein.com on May 15.

Wedding bells rang on Valentine's Day for theatre director Sophie Hunter and actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

It was a private event, but Maison Valentino has since posted a picture of Hunter's dress to its Instagram account, taken by Annie Leibovitz for Vogue.

Instead of going the traditional white route, the 37-year-old donned a dress made of silver lace, embroidered with motifs of vines and pomegranates.

Let us be among the first to say that Hunter looks lovely in a gown she designed herself, alongside Maison Valentino's Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri, according to The Daily Mail.

Hunter and Cumberbatch are also expecting a child together.

The kid is sure to be just as stylish as its parents.

Kim Kardashian's Dark Hair Is Back, And We Love It

Kim Kardashian has gone back to the dark side!

That's right, the reality star has officially doffed her blond locks (for now, at least) in favour of the dark brown, almost black hair with which we're so familiar.

The mother-of-one was photographed taking her daughter North West to a ballet class, and was seen sporting dark hair that perfectly matched a black tank top and exercise pants on Thursday, New York Magazine reported.

Kim looks great in just about anything, and we were growing to love her platinum locks, but there's no denying how gorgeous she looks with her natural colour (especially against her always-bronzed skin).

We wonder if she'll try a new colour soon! Purple, perhaps? Only time will tell!

Which colour do you prefer on Kim? Let us know in the comments below!
