Nail Art: An Easy Tie Dye Design For Summer

$

0
Summer is quickly approaching, and that means vibrant colours are becoming more prominent in our wardrobes. To match your summery outfits, you can also rock bold colours on your nails with this easy tie dye nail art design.

nail art

To complete this look, you will need white nail polish, four vibrant polishes and a nail art brush.

1. To begin, apply one coat of white polish and allow to dry. This will make any colour you use more vibrant, and you'll require fewer coats to reach full opacity.

2. Once the white is dry, take a nail art brush and create a thick stripe of one of the vibrant colours at the base of your nail (take up about 1/4 of your nail). No need to be neat or precise; this is just the first coat. Repeat this step with the remaining colours of your tie dye design, moving toward the tip of the nail. The colours do not have to be opaque at the end of this step.

nail art

3. Now work backwards. Apply a second coat to the colour at the tip of your nail, making it opaque. Next, apply a second coat of the colour next to the tip, but also create small lines over the tip colour. This is how you achieve the tie dye effect.

4. Moving on to the third colour, apply a second coat and create lines into the previous/second colour. Extend lines of the second colour into the third colour as well. Lastly, take the final colour at the base of nails, apply a second coat and extend lines into the third colour. Extend lines of the third colour into the final/fourth colour as well.

Allow the design to dry for about five to 10 minutes, and then apply a top coat.

Polishes used: Sinful Colors Snow Me White, Avon Orchid Splash, Avon Cosmic Splash, Avon Watermelon, Avon Coral Beat

Singer and actress Selena Gomez shared her love of Calgary on Tuesday with some beautiful, behind-the-scenes photos of her day in the city.

The "Hands To Myself" performer swept through Alberta this week as part of her Revival tour, playing Edmonton's Rexall Place on Monday before entertaining a massive crowd at Calgary's Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday evening.

The 23-year-old star posted photos to Instagram and Facebook of her trip, showing her blowing on a dandelion on a hill overlooking the Saddledome, walking through the river, perching on an old car in a Guns 'n' Roses T-shirt and meeting a group of happy concert-goers.

"Calgary, Canada ❤️," wrote the Texas-born performer under a photo with her fans.

Gomez played Calgary in 2011, but a 2013 performance in the city was moved to the nearby city of Lethbridge after the Saddledome, along with much of the city, flooded.

The singer's next stop is in Saskatoon, Sask. on Thursday.

Misha Collection Under Fire For Show With All-White Models Walking To Beyonce's 'Formation'

$

When Beyonce released "Formation," it was heralded as a black girl anthem. As Essence put it, "It is wholly and undeniable a tribute to blackness—particularly black girl power."

So when an Australian designer used it as the soundtrack to her fashion show — with only white models walking down the runway — shit went down.

misha collection

It happened at the Misha Collection show, which closed off Australia Fashion Week on Monday. Bella Hadid led the gaggle of Caucasian models (and was supposedly paid $400,000 to be part of it), for the show's finale, as you can see from IMG's Instagram video below.

@BellaHadid closes the @MishaCollection show #IMGStars #MBFWA #IMGModelsAustralia

A video posted by IMGmodels (@imgmodels) on

The lack of diversity in the model selection is problematic in itself, but the fact that a group of all-white models walked to a song that celebrates Black women seems completely backwards.

Yahoo! was the first to point out the backlash the video received.

Here is a small sampling of the comments from outraged Instagram users:

"Not a person of color in sight…."

"How you gonna use black songs but not black people smh."

"Thy (sic) are they walking to formation? Not one black model or POC in sight. Tried it."

"Idk how blind you have to be to see what's wrong with that statement. the reason people complain is because there is a obvious be blatant lack of POC in the industry. there has NEVER, I repeat never, been a lack of white models in this industry. people complain because representation matters. that's really not too difficult of a concept."

misha collection

This gaffe is another example of how the lack of diversity in fashion continues to be an issue.

Yes, small steps are being made for more inclusion, such as Zac Posen's predominantly black model casting in his fall 2016 fashion show at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) and Kanye West's diverse cast at his Yeezy Season 3 show.

However, a recent runway diversity report by The Fashion Spot suggests that while NYFW was the most diverse it had ever been in its fall 2016 season, the runways in London, Paris and Milan saw people of colour, plus-size, transgender and aged models under-represented.

In other words, a lot of work still needs to be done.

Despite this, there's a silver lining to blunders similar to Misha Collection's model cast and song choice.

As Yahoo!'s Nora Crotty puts it, "they bring much-needed attention to an important issue that’s been plaguing the industry for WAY too long."

Bella Hadid Wears Quite Possibly The Sexiest Dress Of All-Time To 2016 Cannes Film Festival

Sorry Kendall Jenner, but Bella Hadid just proved to be the champion of racy Cannes fashion with her latest ensemble.

On Wednesday, the 19-year-old model attended the "Unknown Girl" premiere at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival wearing what can best be described as a *HOLY SMOKES TOO HOT* dress with a waist-high slit.

bella hadid

bella hadid

Actually, now that we think of it, racy is an understatement.

Between the red satin fabric, plunging neckline, super skimpy halter strap, ultra-low back and, of course, the slit, it takes a lot of confidence (and most likely double-stick tape) to rock this custom Alexandre Vauthier gown — and you can bet Bella pulled it off flawlessly.

532140930

bella hadid

And we have to say, we're impressed the ELLE cover girl managed to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions, given the scandalous nature of the gown. We mean, she's clearly not wearing any underwear, and with the front cleavage and side boob, a lot could have gone wrong.

As one of our HuffPost Canada editors pointed out (in a very loving manner), "There's more fabric on the floor than there is on her body!", while another noted "[HER] VAGINA IS LITERALLY RIGHT THERE UNDER HER RED DRESS."

bella hadid

bella hadid

We also have to give Bella kudos for being able to still look incredibly glamorous and classy in such a sexy dress ... and we think she has her stylist and hair and makeup artists to thank. Hadid's semi-beehive updo was ultra chic, and showed off her drop diamond earrings beautifully, while her makeup was kept fairly simple, consisting of soft eye makeup and coral lips. The earrings, along with her diamond bracelet and rings, really upped the glam factor, and the strappy black sandals were a smart choice of footwear.

Your move, Kenny.

High Schooler India Ross Recreates Beyoncé's Met Gala Look For Her Prom, Majorly Slays

Last year, we all bowed down to Beyoncé's sheer and oh-so-naked Givenchy Haute Couture Met Gala dress. If you can't remember the frock, which featured back cutouts and mystical hand-sewn crystals (shame on you), then here's a reminder:

beyonce

Un-Bey-lievable!

Now, here we were thinking no one could ever touch Queen Bey's look again. The dress had this immortal quality to it that no one could ever recreate.

Except for one high schooler.

India Ross, an 18-year-old from St. Louis, decided to make her prom dreams come true and recreate the "Lemonade" star's blingy Givenchy 2015 Met Gala number.

Working with designer Toi Hall of Toi Box Couture, Ross nailed everything from the perfectly-curled high blond ponytail to the sharp eyebrows along with the embellishment placement and the drop down diamond earrings.

And the best part? The teen created the look using materials from Walmart, eBay and Michaels. Who needs Riccardo Tisci, right?

"I love Beyoncé yes she's my inspiration no my dress not over a million [dollars] like hers," India, who will double major in fashion business and fashion merchandising at Columbia College Chicago this fall, wrote on her Instagram page.

A photo posted by India Ross (@iamindiaross) on

According to US magazine, the prom dress was created using mesh material with over 2,000 hand-placed crystals. The total value of the dress came in at $800.

"This has been a true blessing," she said. "I never thought that taking pictures at my prom would just blow up overnight."

And yes, if you are wondering, India's prom date totally nailed the Jay Z look.

Australian Man Assaulted For Wearing A Dress Does Photo Shoot, Won't 'Let Gender Terrorists Win'

After a vicious attack caused because he was wearing a dress, one queer man's bloodied face became synonymous with gay bashing in Australia.

Isaac Keatinge, 25, was physically assaulted by three men in April, on his way home from a party. Keatinge told the Sydney Morning Herald that he was targeted because he was wearing a dress, which the men mocked using homophobic and transphobic slurs.

WARNING: Image below is graphic.

"I was confronted by some straight men who didn't appreciate the gorgeous gown or make-up I was wearing," Keatinge wrote in a now-deleted Facebook post, that accompanied a selfie where he looked severely beaten and sported a black eye. The photo was circulated by various news outlets, such as Buzzfeed and ABC, which reported Keatinge needed 15 stitches after the assault.

After seeing that photo, Heaps Gay, an LGBTQI+ event organization and digital publication, wanted to help Keatinge change the narrative behind his public image.

The group threw him and his friends their very own photo shoot with photographer Bradley Tennant, with the images going public two days before International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

Heapsgay was inspired by both Keatinge and the "Keep Newtown Weird And Safe" rally, which was ignited by a string of assaults associated with homophobia in Keatinge's area.

Newtown, a neighbourhood in Sydney known for its many queer and transgender residents, experienced an influx of increase assaults which some have attributed to "lock-out laws." The bylaws enacted night curfews in surrounding areas near Newtown, leading those who want to stay outside longer to enter the suburb.

In doing the photo shoot, Keatinge wanted to emphasize that there should be no penalties for wearing any clothing, regardless of one's gender.

"The rules of gender are so heavily enforced, and I think certain groups of people have an institutionalised idea of reinforcing those norms. It’s almost like there’s a vested interest in the pecking order," he told Heaps Gay. "But the future is so bright!"

And while Keatinge was thankful for support sent to him after the assault, he was also critical of his nation's role in perpetuating oppression.

"While Australia continues to be ruled by rich white people, and continues to ignore its violent history/present of oppression and dispossession, it’s hard to have faith in the extended, arbitrary and very imagined community we call Australia," Keatinge said.

Queer, transgender, gender non-conforming and intersex individuals in Australia experience disproportionate amounts of violence than the general population, reports the Australia Human Rights Comission.

A photo posted by @minceylord on

Over 85 per cent of queer, transgender, and intersex Australians have experienced abuse, harassment, and/or violence, reports a New South Wales study.

Although Keatinge wishes he could change what happened to him, he wouldn't do so if it meant he couldn't be himself.

"I would certainly have called an Uber rather then walk to the bus stop, could I change the past," he told Attn. "However, I would not change my appearance, for this would be allowing the gender terrorists to win."

Beauty Vlogger Mayra Isabel Shows Us How To Apply Makeup With A Sock

If there's one thing we never thought we'd see used in a beauty routine, it's a sock.

But lo and behold, it has happened, because hey, if there's one thing we know about the beauty world, it's that nothing is off limits.

Enter beauty blogger MayraTouchOfGlam (a.k.a Mayra Isabel) who is claiming your average (clean) sock may just be "the next Beautyblender."

In her latest YouTube video, "Beauty Hack: Applying Makeup With A SOCK!" (which you can watch above), Mayra explains how she one day took a closer look at the heel of a sock and noticed how much thicker, fluffier and softer it was compared to the rest of it.

Happy Friday Used my sock hack in my latest video! Glad to see some of you trying it out

A video posted by Mayra Isabel (@mayratouchofglam) on

Using a pair of $6.23 socks from Walmart, the beauty guru shows viewers how to apply foundation using the heel material of the bunched-up sock, just like a brush or Beautyblender.

Dabbing and blending in her foundation, Mayra explains how the bulkiness and of the sock allows your product to be applied quickly and flawlessly, leaving no streaks on the face.

sock makeup

"It is crazy how nicely it blends," the blogger notes. "And I love how it applies very, very nicely."

And if you're worried about the sock soaking up too much of your foundation, don't fret. Mayra says unlike many other brushes and sponges which absorb too much product, a sock doesn't pick up too much makeup.

"I cannot believe a frickin' sock can do this!" the beauty blogger proclaimed. "I'm in shock!"

sock makeup

Besides the easy cleaning process (just throw it in the wash), Mayra notes it's a great tool for contouring, concealing and baking your makeup too.

And Mayra's main tip? Make sure your socks are clean. Because no one wants a dirty sock on their face. That's just gross.

Dressing For Your Body Shape Is The Key To Looking Great

$
0
0
Out of the many reasons that my clients hire me, wanting to learn how to dress for their body shape is probably at the top of their list. They understand that knowing how to dress for their particular shape is key to looking great. Why? Because it helps create visual balance and harmony. Visual balance and harmony, in turn, pleases the eye. When something is pleasing to the eye, well, it looks good. Really good.

It also saves you time when getting dressed because your closet is only stocked with items perfectly suited to you.

When you know how to dress for your shape, you know how to play up your assets and downplay the areas of your body that you don't necessarily want to draw attention to. You know how to highlight certain parts, de-emphasize others and fool the eye into believing that you are the epitome of proportion and balance.

It also helps you know which clothing cuts, styles and lengths look best on you, how to wear certain items to suit your body best and how to choose and place accessories to monopolize on the body you've got.

Having this knowledge also saves you time and money. Once you know which cuts and styles suit your shape, you know which items to avoid when shopping and which ones to hone in on. You no longer spend money buying things that don't flatter you and that sit in your closet unworn. It also saves you time when getting dressed because your closet is only stocked with items perfectly suited to you.

If you want to learn how to best dress for your shape, there are a number of different ways to do so. You can hire a stylist like me to help you, you can head over to your local library or bookstore to see what they have available, or you can turn to the internet for a ton of info and tips. You'll even find online stores dedicated to helping you shop based on your shape.

Smitherystyle.com is a Canadian e-boutique founded in Toronto by Chief Stylesmiths, Rena and Mavis. According to Rena, "Smithery makes shopping online easier by offering a simple shape finder tool, modeling the clothes on REAL women representing each body shape, and including customized styling tips to make three outfits from every piece."

Sizeable.com.au is an Australian online store founded by Melbourne-based blogger Larissa Thorne. Larissa states that at Sizeable, "we don't believe that every woman's body can really be boiled down to five specific types, instead what we're trying to do is give women a better idea of what clothes would look like on somebody whose body better resembles their own rather than the standard fit model."

So if wanting to learn how to dress for your particular body shape is on the top of your list or somewhere further down, there are a number of different options and resources out there for you to do so. If it's nowhere on your list or even if you don't have a list, that's OK. If you ever change your mind, you'll know exactly where to go.

Russia's Dashik Gubanova Has Hair Like Rapunzel And She's Letting It Down For The World To See

The fairy tale "Rapunzel" tells the story of a pretty, young thing with her ridiculously long hair who wasn't able to go around flaunting it because her father locked her in a tower.

One, we think that's totally rude. And two, if you've got the hair THAT long, then you deserve to show it off!

And that's exactly what Dasha Gubanova, the modern-day real-life Rapunzel, is doing.

Hailing from Russia and making her fairytale counterpart totally proud, Gubanova is freaking the Internet out by letting down her waist-length hair that she hasn't cut since 2003.

Yes, that's correct, she hasn't chopped her locks for 11 years.

On her Instagram, which has over 130,000 followers, the Russian notes her goal is to grow her hair to her toes, at which point she plans to chop it off and donate it for wigs.

The girl is getting pretty close to that goal considering her hair is already below her knees.

Now, let's be real here, we have A LOT of questions — how long does it take the Russian beauty to wash her hair? How long does it take to dry? Does she have endless knots? Split ends? How much shampoo and conditioner does she use? Do you use it as a cape? Is her shower clogged? Is her vacuumed clogged? Hair does shed, people!

Emily Ratajkowski Says Being Sexy Made It Harder For Her To Get Acting Roles

Emily Ratajkowski may be one of the sexiest women in the world right now, but according to the 24-year-old model and actress, this label hasn't always helped her.

In an interview with the Evening Standard, the "Gone Girl" actress says her looks have created problems throughout her life, and most recently, in her acting career.

"If you’re a sexy actress it’s hard to get serious roles," she tells the magazine, whose latest issue she covers. "You get offered the same thing that they’ve seen you in.

"People are like sheep and they’re like 'Oh, that’s what she does well.' What’s so dumb is that women are 50 per cent of the population and they want to spend money to see movies where they’re portrayed as three-dimensional characters."

emily ratajkowski

Ratajkowski, who shot to fame after starring in Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" video, says she started receiving negative attention because of her looks at the age of 11, when she began to go through puberty.

"I started to realize that I was being perceived differently. It was confusing," she says. "Basically it was more about the way that people had a problem with a girl looking like a woman because it confused them, it made them feel uncomfortable and I think there was a lot of guilt that they wanted to induce."

And despite her mother's wishes for her to become a brain surgeon ("She didn't like the idea that I would think that [my appearance] was the only thing that I was going to be valued for"), Emily says she attributes her feminist values to her mom.

"[My mother] always told me never to feel sorry or apologetic or embarrassed by my body, to never apologize for my sexuality," she tells the Evening Standard.

Top Beauty Trends For 2016 Go Bold And Bright

$
0
0
Dewy skin, bright colours and achieving that au naturel look is all the fuss this season.

How do you get this season's hot beauty trends without spending a pretty penny? Here are a few tips and tricks.

Go lippy or go home.
Get luscious lips this season by trying some of the latest lip trends! Try candy-coloured shades, ultra-glossed lips or go grunge with darker, matte shades. You don't have spend a fortune trying all these looks. Retailers like Shoppers Drug Mart or Well.ca offer a range in prices and brands to select from. Find a formula you like that carries a wide variety of colours and finishes (like Milani Color Statement Lipstick available in 30+ shades in matte and crème).

Korean inspiration.
From intensive skin care routines to BB creams, Korean beauty trends are a growing influence and the origin of the "I woke up like this" look that is typically seen on Instagram. One example is the double cleanse system, where you cleanse once with oil cleanser (try the Burt's Bees Cleansing Oil!) to remove makeup followed by a foaming cleanser. Doing a deep clean every week or so is a great way to improve your natural radiance and glow. Find the most popular products on Amazon, such as the Elizavecca Milky Piggy Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask and Sari's personal review of the product here.

Non-touring.
That's right, it's no longer about contouring. As the temperatures start to rise, it's time to opt for lighter; low-maintenance beauty products to achieve a fresh look for the spring and summer months. It's all about healthy skin with subtle highlighting. The Body Shop's Drop of Light line will help you get the glow you're looking for. At beautyBOUTIQUE, try looking for Clinique's Chubby Stick Sculpting Highlight. Perfect for the girl on the go!

90s revival.
As you know, history tends to repeat itself and that definitely holds true with beauty trends. Some classic 90's trends are back with a refined, modern touch! Try your hand at an accent braid with tousled hair like Blake Lively or Dutch braids as seen at Coachella by Kylie Jenner. Knot buns are another popular hair trend to try! Don't forget to be playful with colour! Pink can be a fun spring hair colour to try, but you might not want to rock a full head of pink hair. Try it as an accent subtle highlight near the front of the face. Manic Panic always has a great selection of colours, as well as Color Brilliance (both available at Sally Beauty Supply).

The bold and the beautiful.
Big, bold brows are in, but there are so many brow products to choose from! What are the best products? And which ones give you the best results for your buck. On the higher end of beauty brands a few top picks include the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz Pencil, Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade (available at Sephora), and Benefit Cosmetics Instant Brow Pencil. The Lis Watier Eyebrow Pencil and The Nano Retractable Eyebrow Pencil by Marcelle are also great options if you are looking for something a little more cost friendly.

How To Take The Cutest Grocery Store Pic, As Demonstrated By Selena Gomez

$
0
0
When you're planning the perfect #OOTD photo (that's "outfit of the day," for those of you who don't know), the backdrop is just as important as the ensemble you're showcasing.

Whether it's a really cool graffiti wall, a scenic nature setting or your favourite 'gram-worthy coffee shop, the background of your photo is meant to add life to your outfit, without taking away from it altogether.

Given this, you'd think that the grocery store would be the last place you'd consider taking an #OOTD. After all, what good does aisles of food do to enhance your outfit?

Well, it turns out grocery stores make the perfect Instagram backdrop, at least according to the most popular person on the social media app, Miss Selena Gomez.

restock the bus -grocery shopping in Saskatoon

A photo posted by Selena Gomez (@selenagomez) on

Okay, okay, maybe Selena didn't actually say it's the perfect backdrop, but she did use a local grocery store in Saskatoon to take a really cute pic that proves our point. And besides, you know what they say, a picture's worth a thousand words...

So let's just break down the anatomy of the 23-year-old singer's winning Instagram photo, shall we?

1. The cute but casual outfit
Not only is the "Hands To Myself" songstress' oversized shirt, denim cut-offs and combat boots super cute, but they're also totally appropriate for the scene. We mean, you're not going to be wearing a ballgown while going grocery shopping right? However, she does still keep that "star" factor by wearing her sunglasses indoors. So extra points to Selener for keeping it real.

2. The choice of aisle
Notice how the former "Wizards of Waverly Place" star chose the dairy aisle as opposed to the section that has cereal? This is actually a really smart choice. Dairy and meat aisles have good lighting, which, as we all know, is imperative for a good photo.

3. The use of the aisle's lines to draw your eyes onto the main subject
The main subject, obviously, being Gomez. The composition of this photo is actually quite strong, with the aisles creating lines that lead the eye to Selena. The aisles, along with their accompanying sign also frame her, which, again, makes her the main attraction.

4. The cart
Rather than just stand in the middle of the aisle and pose, Selena took her photo to the next level by posing (casually) atop of cart. Again, totally cute and oh-so-clever.

5. The popsicle
Food in photos is always a winner on Instagram.

So there you have it! How to take the perfect #OOTD at the grocery store, as demonstrated by Selena Gomez. If you want to try it as well, we just recommend going on a less busy day for a cleaner backdrop.

Happy 'gramming, friends!

ASOS Have Designed A Bra To Show Off Your Side Boob

A few weeks ago, we were introduced to the underboob bra. Most of us were confused, and others were intrigued. Lingerie had just took a whole new (racy) turn.

But let's be real — sure, the underboob is risqué, but it's not like we see the look flaunted that heavily on red carpets by celebrities. It's all about the side boob (we mean, did you see Bella Hadid walk the 2016 Cannes red carpet?!) And for that, British fashion haven ASOS have gone ahead and designed the side boob bra.

side boob bra

Bye, underboob. Your moment is over.

The 'Giant Fishnet Side Boob Bralette' is here and selling for $40.48 CDN. Coming in sizes XS to L, the bralette is offered in three colours and can also be matched with a 'Giant Fishnet High Leg Thong.'

side boob bra

As Refinery29 points out, if you "need something to wear to your upcoming EDM festival/boudoir photoshoot," then you kind of need this bra.

So what do you wear with this bra to flaunt your edging cleavage? Well, it all begins with a good, low-plunging camisole. We personally love this simple, drapey piece from Aritzia. It just floats on the body. And don't forget about all those side cut-out dresses, as a lot of them are made to reveal the side boob.

And if you're not into side cleavage, then that's totally OK too.

So three cheers to ASOS and their endless supply of over-the-top clothing picks!

Thinx New Period Underwear Campaign Is First To Feature Transgender Model

Contrary to what menstrual marketing would have you believe, that time of the month doesn't usually include mysterious blue liquids or giddy laughing women prancing in white pants. Realistic portrayals of what periods are actually like for cisgender women are hard to come by in commercials; non-existent, for those in the transgender community.

It's why Thinx, the New York-based company behind "period-proof underwear," is ushering in another menstrual innovation: transgender people in advertising.

Featuring model Sawyer DeVuyst, Thinx's gender-inclusive ad campaign has taken over New York's Union Square subway station with images of DeVuyst in the brand's black underwear, posing effortlessly in handstands and levitating off the ground.

DeVuyst, who is a trans man, had previously inspired Thinx's "people with periods" project, which came with the launch of their "boyshorts" underwear. In conversation with Thinx, DeVuyst explained how periods would endanger him.

"You're in the men's room and someone hears you rustling a paper because you're opening a tampon," he said. "It outs you."

As Thinx's CEO, Miki Agrawal, is committed to socially-conscious business, she told Bustle that transgender inclusion in her company's advertising and product line was important.

"We thought it was high-time that people see a menstruating trans man 10-feet-tall in the subway," said Agrawal, who was born and raised in Montreal. (Her twin sister Radha Agrawal founded Daybreaker, the morning rave scene.)

The idea for creating a product for the trans community came after customers complained about Thinx'sr tagline "For Women With Periods."
This pushed Thinx to rethink their marketing tactics and prompted them to send out a pledge via email to improve their efforts in de-stigmatizing periods for all genders.

"We thought, if our goal is to break this taboo and eliminate the shame associated with periods globally, we’ve gotta do that for everyone," Agrawal told theHuffington Post.

And this isn't the first time Thinx is pushing boundaries with an ad campaign — back in October, the brand turned heads with its controversial underwear ads in New York subway stations. These ads took an unconventional approach to advertising, with women holding fruit and dripping eggs symbolizing menstrual flow. Originally, the ads were stalled from appearing in public because of how much skin the models showed and "inappropriate imagery."

How To Survive A Weekend At The Cottage When You Don't Like Cottages

$
0
0
I will be honest here with you in this precious space: I would rather be stranded in space like Sandra Bullock in "Gravity" than spend a cottage weekend with any of you.

I’m sorry, but I hate nature (when I can’t hop in my car and abandon it whenever I want). I also hate communal spaces, small talk in the morning, sleeping on floors or on old, uncomfortable beds, and not having enough time to live my own life or be my best self. In short, I would rather be woken up by my cat before sunrise every morning than share a bathroom with a slew of humans like it’s our first year college dorm all over again. (See: I did not stay in residence in university for this very reason.)

But sometimes you have to. And I say "you" because my friends are all very aware that I will not ever go to their cottages and only the promise of Harry Styles being in attendance will change my mind. "You," on the other hand, are likely quite polite and accommodating and will happily deal with everything I just mentioned because you’re a lovely, kind friend. But I’m not. So with honesty and hurtful bluntness in mind, here’s how to survive a cottage weekend if you’d rather be doing anything but that. Bless your patient hearts.

1. Try not to go
I mean, I’m just going to start here. Have you tried not going? Have you said "Nope, I can’t, I hate this, I can’t do it"? Have you really? Try this, and then report back.

Didn’t work? Okay, well next time say it like you’re almost offended that you’d be asked in the first place. Or just print out this page and hand it to them and say, “I hate the outdoors.”

2. Remember: this is not a hotel
Which means there is nothing for you here and you can rely on no one but yourself. There are no tiny shampoos, no tiny conditioners, nor facewash more expensive than your own. There are other people, yes, but they likely forgot their own gear so they’ll be trolling for whatever available toiletries they can get their greedy hands on.

This means that you buy and bring for yourself; that you scour the travel section of Shoppers and Sephora and buy face wipes (because good luck washing your face like an actual person with one bathroom between 16 people), tiny shampoo, tiny conditioner, tiny soap, a toothbrush, mini toothpaste, and all the dry shampoo you can muster. Why? Because by Saturday (the morning of your arrival), you’ve realized that one shower between the amount of people on the cover of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album is a hellscape the likes of which not even Wes Craven would dare tackle.

3. So: dry shampoo
Like, I can’t stress this enough. (Batiste is great! Dare to dream!) And on top of this, any humidity-fighting hairspray in travel-sized form. Am I repeating myself? Yes, and that’s because I’ve forgotten both before, and that was when spending the weekend in a hotel, not the farm from Charlotte’s Web. People will be Instagramming like monsters. You have to have your own back.

4. Keep makeup so minimal you want to physically sob
I have done cottage weekends one of two ways: 1) ill-prepared, and 2) not at all. So learn from my mistakes. Scrap the makeup bag. I’m not kidding. You will be working in a less-than-ideal lighting situation, and any/all makeup you apply will also somehow absorb into your face in a way usually reserved for horror films about houses of wax. So: CC cream or BB cream, some type of powder (the choice of yours), mascara, one to two shades of lip whatever, and then anything needed for your eyebrows. That’s it. Trust me. This is not a contour-friendly zone. Now is not the time for strobing. Get in, get out, and do what you’ve got to do to survive. (Also, this way if you crash without washing your face — a.k.a. The Anne T Donahue Special™ — the world will not come to an end.)

5. Sunscreen
All of it. All types. I don’t care which brand, but I care that you bring no less than 12 bottles. Because you know who will hate a cottage weekend sunburn? You, because it’s a reminder of the fact that you were at a cottage at all. Apply every hour, on the hour, and whenever somebody makes a snide, Mike’s Hard Lemonade-induced remark, smile to yourself knowing that when they’re suffering the effects of heat stroke and/or serious skin damage, you will not be, you smart, beautiful soul.

6. Aloe vera gel
Not for you — for the idiot who didn’t put on sunscreen all day. You’re a nice, kind, wonderful person, and now they will be forever in your debt.

7. Imodium, Gravol, and Pepto Bismol
Also known as The Holy Trinity. Things happen at cottages. People forget how to cook. Other people drink too much. And people like me have IBS and can’t eat like, anything, without thinking, "Why did I think today I could eat dairy?" This is what your first aid kit is for. Everyone will have Tylenol. Someone will bring Advil. But no one will be prepared for needing to reign in any/all stomach symptoms in a shared bathroom situation. No one ... except you.

8. Stretchy pants and/or loungewear
Now is not the time to waste outfits. Now is the time to lounge and dress like a lady of leisure. Now is the time to wear oversize jogging pants and those free T-shirts you’ve been given by various bars and/or alcohol companies in the course of your short life. Let your skin breathe. Let your waistbands contract and expand to fit you. Sleep knowing that if you somehow lose or forget something, you won’t care because it’s a Guinness top you got on St. Patrick’s Day once when you walked by a pub. Leave anything nice back home with your spirit. Nothing you’re proud of wants to share this weekend with you.

9. A bathing suit?
I hate water and I hate swimming and I hate hot weather, so I’m assuming you or someone you know will need this. Personally, I would choose to spend the day inside, but you do you, I guess.

10. Anti-mosquito kit: bug spray, long sleeves, a hoodie, long pants, socks, shoes
You will be warm. You will be too warm. You will maybe want to pass away. But you will thank me when everyone’s been attacked by the living dead and you were not. Especially because halfway through the bonfire you got up, put your belongings in the car, and sat in the car listening to Rihanna, driving home.

Cottage weekend 2016, everybody: like "Gravity," but worse. Good luck.

If you thought the 2016 Cannes Film Festival couldn't get any hotter after days upon days of ultra glam looks, well, prepare yourselves, because the stakes just got a whole lot higher in the South of France.

The star-studded amfAR gala, a charity event held at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, took place on Thursday evening and it didn't disappoint. Among those A-list celebs in the spotlight during the festivities? Perry, of course, who was scheduled to perform.

The 31-year-old pop star, who did indeed show up with beau Orlando Bloom, gave us major emoji vibes in her red hot flamenco-inspired Marchesa number which had everyone talking.

The off-the-shoulder lace gown, which featured dramatic ruffled sleeves and train, showed off every inch of the American beauty's body as it clung to her curves. Adorned with delicate rose petals and a beautiful hemline, the dress had us singing "Senorita" by Justin Timberlake all. Night. Long.

As for her beauty look, the "Firework" songstress wore her hair in a slicked-back chignon which elegantly showed off her Harry Winston earrings. Perry also donned a smouldering red lip and her perfectly-sculpted cat-eye for the occasion.

Sir Mix-A-Lot Responds To Blake Lively's 'Oakland Booty' Controversy, Defends Actress

Sir Mix-A-Lot is finally speaking out after Blake Lively's "L.A. face with an Oakland booty" photo caption controversy, and it turns out the rapper isn't mad about her use of his famous lyrics from his hit song, "Baby Got Back."

In an interview with the New York Daily News, the 52-year-old rapper said he doesn't understand why the 28-year-old faced such backlash for the image and caption.

"I don't think she'd wear that dress if she thought that booty is horrible — and to me, it ain't horrible," he told the New York Daily News. "I don't get it at all. She's saying she's proud of her butt. I'm glad she embraced the look, because that's what I wanted (with the song)."

The drama all went down on Wednesday, after Lively posted the split screen photo of herself from the "Cafe Society" premiere at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, where she wore a curve-hugging, gold Versace gown. One photo showed the front of the dress, while the second showed the back, and Lively's derrière.

Many accused the pregnant mother-of-one for being racially insensitive, finding it to be problematic that the line came from a white, wealthy celebrity, whom they thought the song was not about.

However, Sir Mix-A-Lot says he wrote "Baby Got Back," back in 1992 to celebrate curvaceous women of all colours and ethnicities.

Rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot attends the 5th Annual Streamy Awards at The Hollywood Palladium on Sept, 17, 2015 in Los Angeles.

"All I would say to the critics is let's better understand the context of what she said. If what's saying is 'I have this butt that Mix-a-Lot was talking about in 'Baby Got Back,' that's a good thing. She's saying I've embraced this ideal of beautiful."

He also added that he was glad the "Gossip Girl" star didn't take the photo (or caption) down from Instagram.

"I don't think she should," he said.

Once again, Helen Mirren has confirmed her queen status, this time in the South of France.

The 70-year-old Academy Award-winning actress attended the 23rd annual star-studded amfAR Cinema Against AIDS gala on Thursday evening at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, and like always, she proved she is a veteran when it comes to red carpet glamour.

For the event, which was part of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, Mirren donned a sheer Temperley London gown that featured dazzling embellished overlay. The detailed frock, with its 3D elements and low-plunging neckline, consisted of a full skirt and sheer long-sleeves that allowed the Dame to shine.

As for her beauty look, Helen sported a bold crimson lip, blushed cheek and subtle smoky eye, while her icy blond locks were styled to perfection.

On Wednesday, Mirren drastically switched up her look with a slicked-back hairdo for the premiere of Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's "The Unknown Girl." Donning a black and blue lace gown with embellished details, the Dame made news taking a tumble on the red carpet but, obviously, recovered beautifully.

Ashley Graham Opens Up About Model Agents Telling Her To Lose Weight

$

There's no doubt 2016 is the year of Ashley Graham.

The 28-year-old self-proclaimed "size sexy" model made history being the first plus-size model to cover Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue and Maxim and landed herself a role as Joe Jonas' leading lady in DNCE's new music video for "Toothbrush."

However, the success didn't come easy for Graham, as she notes in her latest interview with People magazine.

"I had agencies telling me that I had to lose weight," the Addition Elle lingerie designer told the magazine. "I had one that waved money in my face and said, 'If you lose more pounds you can make a lot more of this,' and he was waving $20 bills in my face."

However, Ashley said the agent's tactics didn't work, and instead pushed to her to gain more weight, in order to avoid being an "in-betweener" in the "plus-size industry."

"That wasn't even a motivator for me to lose weight. I was peaking at a size 18, and in the plus size fashion industry, models go from a size 8 to a size 16/18," she explained. "So if you're on the smaller size or the bigger size, you're not going to work as much as if you're in the middle. So he was trying to encourage me to lose weight but it didn't work, because I was that person where if you told me to go on a diet and lose weight, I'm just going to gain weight."

Graham also told People that although her mother comforted her when she was bullied during her school years ("I was called all kinds of ugly names – cottage cheese thighs, thunder thighs"), she faced more struggles when she moved to New York City at 17.

"I had gained a lot of weight because my mom wasn't cooking for me and I wasn't working out," she said. "I started to really hate myself. I would literally just look in the mirror, and I would be disgusted. It was a constant degrading of my body. You're fat. You're ugly. You're worthless. I'm surprised you're a model. Are some of the things I would say to myself."

But Ashley managed to overcome her negative thoughts by changing her thinking.

"A lot of taking care of my body and my mind and my soul had to do with talking to myself and actually giving myself affirmations," she said. "It got me out of my funk. I still had cellulite, I still had back fat, I still had jiggly arms, and I decided to love every part of it."

Ashley's not the only model who has spoken out about being told to lose weight by career agents — back in April, former Victoria's Secret Angel Erin Heatherton revealed she left the lingerie giant for this very reason.

"I was really depressed because I was working so hard and I felt like my body was resisting me," Heatherton told Time. "And I got to a point where one night I got home from a workout and I remember staring at my food and thinking maybe I should just not eat."

She continued, "I realized I couldn’t go out into the world—parading my body and myself in front of all these women who look up to me—and tell them that this is easy and simple and everyone can do this."

Cosmo is reporting the new trend that is taking over your Instagram feed was brought to life by artist and hairstylist, Janine Ker of Salon Aguayo in California. On her website, the hair colourist writes how she pushes the boundaries of what "art is and how it applies to hair."

To get the stenciled look, Ker uses the hair as a canvas and creates a palette from hair tools and colour. She sketches designs on a paper and then brings the drawings to life on the hair.

Take a look!

And the best part? PopSugar says the look is temporary. They say Ker uses Joico InstaTint Temporary Colour Shimmer Spray which only values at $10.
