When Aishwarya Rai walked the red carpet for the premiere of "Slack Bay (Ma Loute)" at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival on Friday, many were quick to note that the Bollywood actress played it too "safe" with her look.

But on Sunday, the 42-year-old former Miss World winner played it safe no more, donning purple lipstick to the premiere of "From The Land Of The Moon" at the French film festival.

And naturally, the Internet went wild.

"Did Aishwarya kiss a smurf this time before she walked the red carpet at Cannes?" wrote on Twitter user.

"petition for aishwarya rai to fire her make up artist. what are those purple lips," tweeted another.

But being the goddess she is, Rai couldn't care less about the haters.

"I was not nervous (about the Cannes look) as it has been 15 years (since I have been) representing L’Oreal here. I enjoy fashion and I treat it like art," she told the Indian Express. "So it doesn't stress me out. It doesn't get me nervous... I am a professional."

As for the rest of her ensemble, Aishwarya wore a Rami Kadi off-shoulder pink dress adorned with floral embellishments. Her long locks were pulled up into a glam pony and a sexy, smoky eye complemented her bold lip colour without drawing attention away from it.

And the Cannes glamour didn't stop there for Aishwarya — on Saturday, the Indian actress went full-on Bollywood glam for the premiere of "The BFG."

Donning a soft pink Elie Saab haute couture gown, Rai was the picture of elegance, especially with her soft waves and dark red pout.

Keep the looks comin', Aishwarya!

Blake Lively has been killing the fashion game at the 2016 Cannes Film Fesitval.

The 28-year-old actress and L'Oreal Paris ambassador has donned a number of glamorous gowns to the French film fest, leaving us nothing short of breathless (we mean, come on, did you see her Cinderella dress?).

But one thing that has been noticeably absent from Blake's ensembles is her blossoming belly...until now, that is.

On Saturday, the mother-of-one, who is currently expecting baby number two with Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, walked the red carpet for the screening of Steven Spielberg's "The BFG" donning a skin-tight bright blue Versace gown that highlighted her baby bump beautifully.

The sparkling, one-shouldered number featured a dramatic train and a super-sexy thigh-high slit that just added to the appeal.

And you can bet the "Gossip Girl" star worked that red carpet like a pro, proudly showing off her growing belly.

As for her beauty look, the blond stunner kept things simple, pulling up her coveted locks in a glam ponytail and opting for minimal makeup of soft eyeshadow, mascara and pink lips.

We can't wait to see the rest of Blake's maternity style!

Lessons From The Most Beautiful Women In The World

$
0
0
Jennifer Aniston was recently voted People's 2016 World's Most Beautiful Woman. This is the second time that the hugely popular and likeable film star has made the list. Her first win was back in 2004. With her warm smile, toned body that seems to defy age, and famous hair, it's a well-deserved recognition.

Of course, we all know that there isn't just one woman who rightly holds the title as the world's most beautiful woman. There are thousands upon thousands of women equally worthy.

What is beauty? Is there one standard? Two bigger and more important questions are: what does beauty mean to you, and do you think you're beautiful?

You are the most important person to accept that you are beautiful. Sadly, I think many women are too self-critical, focusing on flaws instead of strengths. Here are some ideas to help cultivate your own unique beauty.

"The absence of flaw in beauty is itself a flaw." - Havelock Ellis, Writer.

Celebrate what makes you unique.
Banish the word flaw from your vocabulary when describing yourself. Model Cindy Crawford admitted in an interview that she used to hate her mole. As a young girl, she wanted to have it removed. Her mother talked her out of it, convincing her that the scar would be worse. It's now her most distinguishing feature and helped to launch her career as one of the world's most successful models.

Barbra Streisand's nose, Kim Kardashian's curves, Lauren Hutton and Georgia May Jagger's gap-toothed grins...these and countless other women have turned what may be considered a flaw into a beautiful advantage.

"Character contributes to beauty. A mode of conduct, a standard of courage, discipline, fortitude, and integrity can do a great deal to make a woman beautiful." - Jacqueline Bisset, Actress.

Create a list of what you like about YOU.
Make a list of what you like about yourself. Not just your looks or your clothes but all of you: your personality, values, interests, hobbies, passions, friendships, etc. All these things contribute to your sense of self and beauty.

Some of the most beautiful women to me are Meryl Streep, Gloria Steinem, and Christiane Amanpour. They may not have those classic features typically defined as beautiful but they have courage, strength, conviction and compassion. When I see them in action, they are some of the most beautiful women I know.

"Create your own style ... let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others." - Anna Wintour, Fashion Editor.

Create your own sense of beauty and style.
This is an exciting time for women. There is so much more access and awareness about fashion. We are able to pick and choose from our favourite designers, make-up and cosmetic lines to create our own look. Some of the most beautiful and stylish people I know mix it up. Whether you're into vintage, classic, modern, sophisticated, hippy or a blend of all of these, experiment with clothes and styles until you find the look that feels right for you and lets your best self shine through.

" I do not think about being beautiful. What I devote most of my time to is being healthy." - Ann Bancroft, Actress.

Beauty is health: be healthy!
This is probably the most important thing. Beauty is health and health is beauty. In her interview with People, Jennifer Aniston was asked when she felt most beautiful. She said it was after a great work out. I totally agree. Increasing your heart rate, activating your sweat glands and releasing endorphins pumps positive energy throughout your body. The foundation of beauty centers on health, fuelled by physical activity and eating well. I know that when I'm eating well and exercising on a regular basis, I feel much more radiant.

Beauty: another word for love?
While I congratulate Jennifer Aniston on being voted as People's 2016's World's Most Beautiful Woman, I also know that each one of us has a unique sense of beauty that we should cultivate and celebrate. I love these two quotes from actresses Audrey Hepburn and Liv Tyler.

"The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides." - Audrey Hepburn.

"There is no definition of beauty, but when you can see someone's spirit coming through, something unexplainable, that's beautiful to me." - Liv Tyler

I couldn't agree more. Beauty is mysterious, elusive, ever changing. Beauty rests in the heart.

Kate Middleton Dons Fashion Picks From Banana Republic And Zara This Week

When you're celebrating the Queen's 90th birthday with the entire Royal Family, you need a rather elegant outfit for the celebrations. And Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, did just that for Queen Elizabeth II's birthday gala that took place on Sunday evening.

Sure, Middleton donned a lovely $6,300 white lace Dolce & Gabbana dress for the spectacular two-hour occasion that was held at the grounds of Windsor Castle, but it was her simple red and pleated blazer that had everyone talking. Straight from the racks of Zara, the 34-year-old proved she's just like us mere mortals — a fan of the mall. Coming in at $99, the cape-like blazer featured a Peter Pan collar and two large buttons at the neck. Naturally, the frock is completely sold out on the Spanish retailer's website.

kate middleton

And if Kate's Zara purchase didn't prove how "just like us" she really is, on Monday afternoon, the Duchess sported a $138 Banana Republic midi-skirt to the launch of a mental health charity with husband Prince William and brother-in-law, Prince Harry.

kate middleton

The mother of Prince George and Princess Charlotte paired the skirt with a gorgeous, loose silk blouse from Goat and navy suede pumps. As her for beauty look, the Duchess flaunted her signature blowout and eyeliner.

kate middleton

As noted by Fashionista, this is the first time Middleton has formally worn Banana Republic, which is big news for Gap, Inc. who are taking a tumble in sales. The sold-out skirt is, of course, massive news for the company.

Well, all we have to say is that these two affordable pieces are definitely both a ~knockout~ for Kate.

Kesha Takes To Instagram To Flip Off Her Haters And Body Shamers

After an ongoing legal battle with Dr. Luke along with fighting her own personal demons, Kesha is finally ready to take back her life

On Sunday, the pop star took to Instagram to address her battle with depression and eating disorders following an array of beach selfies that led to an explosion of body shaming comments.

"I have been battling depression and an eating disorder for a while now. my career is in a strange place and it feels like I'm fighting an uphill fight some days," the 29-year-old wrote on the image of herself giving the middle finger to her haters.

"I have decided to take my life back. my freedom. my happiness. my voice. my worth. I will not just fucking be quiet and hide. today I will say fuck it and live," she continued to write on the photo which has over 68,000 likes and 2,200 comments. "So FUUUUUUUUCK it. today I'm making that choice. AND IM HAPPY AS A DAMN CLAM. and also a big ol fuck u if u wanna hate on my body. just remember that makes u look like a dickhead. ✌ ️"

YAS. GIRL.

Back in March, Kesha revealed to ELLE U.K. her frustrations with the unrealistic expectations in the music industry about what a body is suppose to look like.

kesha

"I started becoming overly critical of my own body because of that. I felt like people were always lurking, trying to take pictures of me with the intention of putting them up online or printing them in magazines and making me look terrible," Kesha noted. "I became scared to go in public, or even use the internet. I may have been paranoid, but I also saw and heard enough hateful things to fuel that paranoia."

This led Kesha to enter a rehabilitation centre for two months, but she notes it was there when she started to gain her confidence back.

"I feel stronger now. Strong enough to admit that I needed help, and strong enough to have faced it head on," she told ELLE. "I’m not fully fixed – I am a person in progress, but I want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Even I need to be reminded that we are who we are. And when I say that, I f*cking mean it, now more than ever."

In the words of Beyonce, "Middle fingers up, put them hands high."

Way to show them haters, Kesha!

Cannes Film Festival 2016: All The Times Araya Hargate Slayed On The Red Carpet

$

Move over Aishwarya Rai and Blake Lively, because there's another style queen slaying the red carpet at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

Meet Araya Alberta Hargate, a 34-year-old British-Thai actress who's known for her roles in "Saranae Siblor" and "Crazy Crying Lady." A fellow L'Oreal Paris ambassador to Lively and Rai, Araya herself is a regular at the annual French film fest, often donning exquisite pieces from designers such as Ashi Studio Couture, Zac Posen, Kaufmanfranco and Giambattista Valli.

And this year is no different. Like her fellow L'Oreal Paris colleagues, she's hitting this year's festival in style, giving Blake and Aishwarya a run for their money.

Let's break down her 2016 Cannes Film Festival for proof, shall we?

The Ralph & Russo Couture Gown

araya hargate

For the "Café Society" premiere and opening ceremony of the 69th annual Cannes Film Festival, Araya was hands-down one of the best dressed of the evening. She wore a dramatic, pink ruffled gown by Ralph & Russo that was fit for (red carpet) royalty.

Oh, and of course she had the perfect Instagram to showcase that stunning ensemble:

We. Die.

The Sexy Versace Frock

Since we're so used to seeing Hargate in voluminous gowns, it was a nice surprise seeing her down something more form-fitting and sexy. This frayed violet Versace gown, while still very pretty and ethereal, is really quite edgy and daring, especially with that illusion panel on the side.

Like we said, SLAY.

The Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Ensemble

araya hargate

Any event with "Chopard" in its name is bound to be ultra glam, so naturally, Araya dressed the part for the Chopard Trophy Ceremony Gala at Cannes. For this occasion, she went back to the princess vibes, donning a baby pink two-piece by Giambattista Valli. The floral brocade fabric was adorned with silver thread and embellished with jewels on the necklace and flowers at the waist.

The Zuhair Murad Gown

araya hargate

For the premiere of "The BFG," Araya stayed true to her voluminous dressing, opting for a Zuhair Murad organza dress. The fashion house described the gown as having "delicately-flowing openwork of printed celadon flowers on the skin-tight sheath dress inside and spreading its tendrils on the overlaid voluminous skirt."

And check out the train:

The Black-And-White Jean Paul Gaultier Gown

araya hargate

At the premiere of "From The Land Of The Moon (Mal De Pierres)," Hargate opted for a completely different colour palette: black and white. This Jean Paul Gaultier gown may just be our favourite of the bunch simply because it looks like a completely different dress depending on which angle you look at it:

How To Embrace Conscious Fashion And Style

There nothing like a change of season to make you rethink your wardrobe. To find out what to wear this spring and summer 2016, I spoke to Molly Fitzpatrick, the Chair of Scrubs in the City, a Sick Kids Hospital Foundation, who also happens to be a respected trendsetter and avid fashion follower.

"I've loved fashion since I was a little girl," she told me. "I love all aspects of the fashion industry. The thrill of the hunt is really fun too!"

On trend for this summer, Molly suggests that "white lace dresses, strappy sandals in all heel heights, and a great statement earring, particularly in turquoise" will take you anywhere.

All photos courtesy of Joan Kelley

Other must-haves include "anything off the shoulder...blouses or dresses," continues Molly. "(They are) very flattering for all shapes and sizes."

If you are looking for a great piece that can carry you through all seasons, one of Molly's favorites is a bit unexpected. "Black leather pants," she says. "I own several pair in different cuts. You can dress them up or down. A thousand miler!"

2016-05-16-1463417928-8287059-JoanFashionleatherpants.jpg

Dressing for the big event

For some, deciding what to wear to a big event can be a challenge. Here is Molly's approach:

"When thinking about what to wear for a charity event, the first thing I consider is the theme. I try to come up with something that works with the theme but also works with my style. For example, this year the theme for Sick Kids Hospital's Scrubs in the City is 'London.' I haven't decided on the dress yet but I know I will be choosing a U.K. designer."

There are a lot of amazing international designers out there, but Canadian designers hold their own on an international stage. One that is really trending right now, according to Molly, is Greta Constantine. "I love Greta because their styles are beautifully cut and I love their fabrics."

Other Canadian designers to watch for this season include Aleks Susak and one of Molly's favorites: "Pink Tartan, because they are giving back. Teaming up with Burt's Bees to save the Bees!"

Conscious fashion choices

If conscious shopping is important to you, there are a few simple things you can keep in mind. You could purchase a high-quality wardrobe staple (for example, instead of several cheap white T-shirts, invest in one well-made shirt that will last longer and look better). You might choose to buy locally produced garments, or be open to high-end consignment shops to look for designer labels. If you want to take it one step further, you may want to check out World Vision's Conscious Consumer Challenge.

Kate Moss Makes Triumphant Return To Cannes Film Festival, Matches With Sister Lottie

After taking a 15 year break from the Cannes Film Festival scene, supermodel Kate Moss FINALLY made her triumphant return on Monday evening and she couldn't have done it in a more perfect way.

Moss stepped out in the French Rivera for the "Loving" premiere in a vintage asymmetrical Halston gown with a thigh-high slit. The bold red frock was accompanied by an array of stunning Chopard jewels.

As for her beauty look, Moss was made-up by celebrity makeup artist and good friend, Charlotte Tilbury. And in a cute little video posted to Charlotte's Instagram account, Kate is seen being totally shy and adorable when showing off her nude lip and shimmering eyes.

The last time the 42-year-old British beauty walked the Cannes carpet, she was hand-in-hand with then boyfriend, Johnny Depp. This time around, however, Moss walked the red carpet solo, but her younger sister, Lottie Moss, was closeby. And believe it or not, the two blonds didn't plan their matching crimson ensembles, it was "#notevenplanned," as Lottie hashtagged on Instagram.

The 18-year-old up-and-coming model, who has already landed herself a Vogue Paris cover, opted for an elegant long-sleeve, silk Dior gown for the iconic film festival. Just like her big sister, Moss decided to pull back her long locks into an gorgeous low bun that allowed her bronzed smoky eye and glossy nude lip shine through.

Later that evening, the sisters hit the star-studded Chopard Wild Party where Lottie donned a stunning pearl embellished Balmain number with sultry sheer panels. As for Kate, the legendary model sported a silk trimmed tuxedo jacket over a little black dress and fishnet stockings.

All we have to say is #twinning (and that red is a great colour on the Moss girls).

Taiwanese Model I-Hua Wu Named New Global Face Of Maybelline New York

Maybelline New York is making history with its brand new global ambassador.

The beauty brand named Taiwanese model I-Hua (pronounced ee-hwa) Wu as the new global face of Maybelline, making her the first-ever Asian model to represent the brand worldwide. She joins the likes of Gigi Hadid, Harieth Paul, Adriana Lima and Jourdan Dunn, who also represent Maybelline New York globally.

i hua wu

i hua wu

"It’s so special that I can represent Taiwanese models and bring them some attention," Wu tells The Cut of her new ambassadorship. "Lots of Taiwanese models come here and work hard but have never been recognized because Taiwan is so small. I’m happy to shine some light on it."

i hua wu

I-Hua was born and raised in Taiwan and started modelling in high school as a way to escape the bullying she faced from her classmates because of her height, according to a press release. In 2011, she entered a modelling contest in China, which jumpstarted her career as she became the first Taiwanese winner of the New Silk Road competition.

Along with walking the runways in New York, London, Milan and Paris, she has been featured in international editions of Vogue, ELLE and Marie Claire, among other publications.

This modelling experience, Wu tells The Cut, has affected the way she has perceived traditional Asian beauty.

"I too used to think that the ideal was a fair complexion and large eyes. I didn’t change my thoughts about this till last year," she explains. "It’s helped to see lots of different type of beautiful. It doesn’t matter if your eyes are big or your complexion is white — people don’t care. As long as you think you’re beautiful, you will be beautiful."

She continues, "Everyone has their own standard of beauty. If there was just one standard, then what does it mean — there are no beautiful people with darker skin? That is just not true...You can’t give yourself such strict definitions of what is beautiful."

We wholeheartedly agree. To see more of I-Hua, check out her Instagram page here.

Sorry Gigi Hadid, but it looks like Joe Jonas has enlisted another model to be part of his latest music video.

The former Jonas Brother and lead singer of DNCE has tapped none other than Ashley Graham to star in the band's upcoming music video for their single "Toothbrush." And let's just say the two appear to get quite cozy, at least if we're judging by the teaser pic:

In the sultry photo shared on Jonas, Graham and DNCE's respective social media channels, the 28-year-old Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover star and the 26-year-old singer are seen laying down in bed, gazing into each others' eyes romantically. Ashley sports a pair of black underwear and a white tee, while Joe wears black jeans and a white tank.

And in a teaser clip shared exclusively with Entertainment Tonight (which you can watch above), Joe and Ash are even seen locking lips. Cue the ~OoOoOos~.

But how does Graham's husband, Justin Ervin feel about the makeout sesh? Ashley says he's not threatened.

"With all my sexiness everywhere, you can't be with an insecure man if you're Ashley Graham," she playfully tells ET.

Alberta Women Explain Why They Put Fort McMurray Tattoos On Their Bodies

$

Anxious to return home, some northern Alberta residents are turning to permanent ink in tribute to Fort McMurray after being forced out by an inferno two weeks ago.

Wildfires prompted a mandatory evacuation order of the region earlier this month. As they fled for their lives and scattered across shelters, hotels, and homes of friends and family, the experience has been deeply personal for those who have been displaced.

We talked to some of them about why they decided to get tattoos to mark the Fort McMurray wildfires.

Kristen Brenton, social work student

“This is something I want to carry with me forever and something I will never lose,” the Keyano College student told The Huffington Post Canada.

She said she opted for the city's airport code in ink as a tattoo, because commemorative T-shirts, hats, and notebooks are temporary tokens, she said.

“Sorry mom,” Brenton wrote in a post debuting her new ink. “After all of this craziness, I've come to the realization that material things are not the most important things. Memories, events, relationships with others, and the fact that I'm alive is what counts.”

Melissa May, Paladin Security technician

“I got my tattoo for comfort. Symbolism. Whenever I look at it, I remember what I went through and what I saw, and what everyone around me went through,” May told HuffPost Canada.

When the entire city was given the order to evacuate, May’s employers went “above and beyond” to make sure she — and her co-workers — were OK amid the chaos.

“I have called Fort Mac home for three years, and will be my home for many years to come. I am proud to be from Fort McMurray.”

Hope Jade, Mac Island swim instructor

“I decided to get the tattoo because even though it was a horrific time, I wanted something that I could tell my kids about one day,” Jade told HuffPost Canada.

After living in the city for nearly two years, the local swim instructor explains her tattoo is a reminder of the strength Fort McMurray showed amid a natural disaster.

Jade said that her initial worry about her mom’s reaction melted away after she revealed her fresh ink to her. “My mom loves it!” she said.

Sherra-Lee Rubia Rory Rovensky, Suncor Energy worker

Born and raised in Newfoundland and Labrador, Rovensky arrived in Fort McMurray right out of high school and never left. That was 22 years ago.

She told HuffPost Canada the strong community bonds made her stay.

“I love it there. I am very proud to say I'm from there. I just feel anytime there is a crisis no matter if it’s one person or 80,000. We pull together to help in anyway we can.”

Even under the stress and tumult, the heavy equipment operator said it’s been hard for her (and for other evacuees) to admit they need help — and accept assistance. But it was an easy decision to get a permanent tribute etched into her skin.

“I got the tattoo to show my pride, we are a city that pulls together in any time of need.”

Jennifer Lynn Cooke, Red Arrow employee

“I wanted the tattoo because Fort McMurray is my home,” Cooke explained to HuffPost Canada.

The Guelph, Ont. native has lived in the oil hub city for eight years. She met her boyfriend, a Newfoundlander, in Fort Mac.

Two days after they were forced to evacuate the city, they got matching tattoos in tribute to their “home away from home.”

“We love Fort McMurray and that's really what our tattoo represents,” she said.

10 Game-Changing Products for Glowing Summer Skin

For the vast majority of Canadians, the warmth of the summer sun isn’t something we take for granted. After all, we spend about 65 per cent of our lives hibernating from the cold or shrouded in the warmth of our parkas.

By the time warm weather hits, we’ve all but acquired the complexion of Morticia Adams. Translucent skin may fly in a Tim Burton film but in the summer, we prefer the sun-kissed glow of an Eva Mendes.

Luckily, that can be achieved without giving the sun free reign to turn you into a rotisserie chicken.

A safer way to achieve the perfect summer glow can be achieved with a combination of skincare products and cosmetics. After all, glowing skin is often the result of healthy, happy skin.

Forget tanning altogether this summer. These coveted products will give a natural sun-kissed glow without the dangerous effects of UV rays.

Snapchat Controversy Arises Over 'Whitewashing' Beauty Filters

Snapchat users, you might want to consider hanging up the flower crown.

Snapchat is currently being called out on social media for "whitewashing," through filters that lighten skin tone. This comes shortly after the app released a "Bob Marley face filter" and faced outrage over "digital blackface."

These filters — which range from a filter where the user wears a flower crown, another making the user's eyes bigger and face slimmer — all noticeably soften skin's appearance and adjust the photo's lighting.

Twitter users of colour noticed that these Snapchat's beauty filters made them appear paler.

Even white people on Twitter took offence to the beauty filters, many of them complaining their retouched selfies appeared paler than they were before.

Although Snapchat hasn't released a statement on the social media outrage, a lot could be said on why the filter was created. It mimics similar photo manipulation apps from Asia, that also transform selfies into lighter, slimmer, and wider-eyed versions of users.

Snapchat's mirror similar skin-lightening controversies that have occurred within the fashion industry, such as Lupita Nyong'o's February 2014 Vanity cover.

Brightness, exposure, and lighting are aspects controlled by these filters, which are still technical issues for even professional photographers and film editors, who must change lighting for images and movies when subjects with varying skin tones are in the same shot.

Photography as a medium has a history of inability to process or consider darker skin tones. It was first developed to capture lighter skin tones. In an NPR interview, photographer Syreeta McFadden discusses the skin biases to photo-taking that continues to plague technology to this day.

"I think it matters because we're talking about a saturation of images of darker skinned people that somehow we've accepted in our popular culture that kind of diminishes our humanity," she said.

Deliberate or not, Snapchat's beauty filters were meant to enhance features that were assumed to be desirable. It's clear that the difficulties in broadening definitions of beauty, digitally and otherwise, are more than skin-deep.

Hudson's Bay Company To Open In Netherlands, Marking First Store Outside Canada

TORONTO — One of Canada's most iconic brands is heading to the land of windmills and tulips.

Hudson's Bay Company announced Tuesday that it plans to open up to 20 stores in the Netherlands over the next two years as part of an aggressive push to grow its presence in Europe.

The move will mark the first time North America's oldest retailer, which was founded primarily as a fur trading company in 1670, has introduced its namesake brand outside of Canada.

"Our DNA is that we experiment and we try things,'' Richard Baker, HBC's chairman and governor, said in an interview from the Netherlands.

"It looks like we're going quicker than we are. And we are going quickly, but we're pretty careful people.''

Baker, and chief executive Jerry Storch, said the company wasn't initially looking at expanding its footprint in the Netherlands but were presented with a "unique opportunity'' when Dutch department store V&D closed its doors last year.

The departure of bankrupt V&D left a hole in the retail market and dozens of empty storefronts in highly sought-after urban locations up for grabs. The retailer's demise was blamed on various factors, including its inability to compete with rivals like fast-fashion powerhouse H&M and criticism that it lacked its own unique identity.

Storch said he is not worried that the same issues that plagued V&D will spell trouble for them. Hudson's Bay's first plan of attack is to massively remodel the former locations it will be leasing, he said.

"(V&D) were terrible. They were awful,'' he said from New York.

Hudson's Bay noted that its chief merchant officer of European operations is Dutch, which it said has helped it navigate the nuances of that new market.

"We don't sit back in Toronto and think we know more about the Dutch market than Europeans do,'' said Storch.

Customers can expect similar products in Hudson's Bay stores as they do back home in Canada, including its trademark blankets and scarves adorned with green, red, yellow and blue stripes.

"It will be in many ways similar to a Hudson's Bay store, but in many ways, uniquely Dutch,'' said Baker, citing the plan to place display fixtures one or two inches higher in the new stores because Dutch residents are typically taller than Canadians.

Baker said the Netherlands was a natural fit for the storied retailer because of the two countries' Allied relationship during the Second World War.

"There is a strong affinity to Canadians in the Netherlands,'' he said, noting that Canada helped liberate the Netherlands and hosted the Dutch Royal Family in exile during that time.

Industry expert Doug Stephens said the decision is a good move for Hudson's Bay to grow its burgeoning real estate portfolio with prime locations, but it's not necessarily a no-brainer for its retail business.

"Bringing a new brand with a new identity that has some sort of foreign cache to it, there is a Canadian cache of sorts,'' said Stephens, the founder of Retail Prophet.

"In the interim, that could generate some interest. Over the long term, that wears off. You become in essence a domestic player and it comes back to: are you delivering a value proposition that is remarkable and resonates with a different audience?

"Ultimately, the smell of maple syrup will wear off.''

Hudson's Bay said it plans to have 17 of the new locations run as stand-alone HBC stores and the other three will operate under the Saks Off 5th banners. Its flagship will be in a newly-built store in Amsterdam, with other locations expected to open in Rotterdam, Zwolle, Breda, Eindhoven, Maastricht and Amesfoort. The stores are expected to open in the summer of 2017.

Last month, the company announced plans to open 40 Saks Off 5th discount stores in Germany beginning next year. It also bought the largest department retail chain in Germany and Belgium, Galeria Kaufhof, for C$3.9 billion last year.

HBC also owns a number of banners including Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor and Home Outfitters.

Life Lessons My Hair Taught Me

$

Let me start off by saying I have really curly hair -- the kind of curls that as a kid you have no clue what to do with so you end up walking around with what resembles a big fluffy cloud. But who wants cloud hair?! I sure didn't, so I resolved to straightening my hair for 30 years. I definitely went through a hair evolution over the course of my life, and if I were a celebrity you would see the typical 'then and now' photo montage in a magazine of all the different hairstyles I endured.

There was the ringlet phase, the short fluffy phase, the attempt at no bangs but couldn't quite let them go phase, the straightening with a real iron phase, the blonde phase, the short straight bob phase, the straight hair with bangs phase and the weave phase... yes, you read that correctly. I've now finally settled for the au naturel look and don't intend on having any more hair phases in my life.

Instead, I'm embracing and accepting what I was born with -- crazy, wild, sexy curls. However, it is fun to change it up once in a while so today after almost a year, I decided to straighten my hair. As I worked the flat iron through my frizz I had a realization -- my hair has grown -- a lot! I know that sounds silly but after years and years of my hair not growing this was huge! The more I studied this small miracle the more I realized my hair was teaching me some significant life lessons!

1) Don't Force It
The more you try to force something that's not meant to be, the more time, money and energy you waste. I spent so much time forcing my hair to be straight -- I invested so much in products, appliances and stylists but I still couldn't get my hair to look like Jennifer Aniston -- WTF?! How many times in life have you banged your head against a wall trying to get something to work and it just wasn't? When you can find a way to let go and try a new approach you may end up surprising yourself with the results. As soon as I started letting my hair do its thing, life just got easier. I saved time, money and energy but most importantly my sanity!

2) Have Patience
The main reason I finally caved and decided to let nature do its thing with my hair is because I was frustrated at the fact it wasn't growing. I knew it was because of all the heat damage and how unhealthy it had become. So I took a vow to give it a break. There are so many times in our lives when we push ourselves to our limits -- often to the point of burnout or illness. You need to give yourself some space to breathe and develop healthy habits. When you allow yourself time to heal that's when you open yourself up to substantial growth. Just like my hair.

3) You Can't Hide
No matter how many serums, creams, or sprays I used you could always tell my hair wasn't really supposed to be straight. There was always some type of kink, and on humid days all bets were off! Not to mention it was all a temporary fix anyways. As soon as I washed my hair I would be back to square one. So many of us hide behind some type of mask -- maybe it's our clothes and appearance, money, or status. Despite how much effort you put into your appearance it's not going to change who you are underneath it all. It's important you stay true to who you are because it doesn't take much for someone to see through all the smoke and mirrors.

The next time you're fighting with your mane, ask yourself what exactly your hair is trying to teach you -- you may learn a very valuable lesson!

Top Tips For Self-Tanning And Laser Hair Removal

I have always loved having a bit of colour during the summer months. Self-tanners have come a long way and really improved in the past five years or so. Now, you can have a real looking tan without the damage from the sun.

Of course, the other part to looking great in the summer is having smooth skin. To find out the latest in laser hair removal, I spoke with Lauren Henderson, Senior Marketing Director of Anti-Aging and Acne. Lauren provided the top tips for laser hair removal.

Top tips for laser hair removal

When using a laser hair removal system, always prep the skin before each treatment by cleansing, shaving and drying the desired treatment area. You should also stop waxing or plucking hair six weeks before your treatment.

At least one day before treatment, test the hair removal system on a patch of skin and try different energy levels.

Be consistent and follow treatment instructions. For best results, treat every two weeks for up to three months or until you see the desired results. Between treatments, one should shave hair vs. waxing or plucking.

When using a laser, lift the laser and place it back on the skin so that it overlaps the previous spot. This creates an overlapping pattern in the treatment area to ensure all hair follicles are covered.

What do most people do wrong with hair removal?

Do not use a laser hair removal system if you have lighter hair color, such as blonde, white, red or grey. In order for the laser to work, you must have naturally dark hair where you are treating. Lighter hair pigments will not absorb enough of the laser's energy to disable the hair follicle.

To find out the top tips on how to use self-tanners and get the best glow, I spoke with Alyson Hogg, Founder and CEO, Vita Liberata.

Alyson shared with me the latest innovations and trends for self-tanning.

The five best tips for self-tanning

Prep the skin by eating lots of fruit and vegetables. Drink lots of water, exfoliate and moisturizer the skin with a gentle scrubby brush.

Circular motions are usually best when applying a self tanner. You don't need to rub it in. You aren't a piece of furniture! The actives will naturally absorb in contact.

For creases in areas such as the elbows and knees, if these areas are very dry apply moisturizer and allow to absorb for at least an hour before tanning. And of course always wipe knuckles, knees and the back of the hands lightly with a damp wash cloth or wet wipe after applying the tan to ensure the most natural looking tan. The skin on these areas is drier and can result in a darker fade if you don't dab them after.

If you don't have a tanning mitt on hand, you can use a large makeup brush (foundation brushes, kabuki brushes) to apply.

Apply evenly. "I use a tanning mitt and always start on my face first taking the product down and then blending the body tan with it. Arms, chest and legs follow, but save the feet and hands for last. You want as little product on the mitt as possible for the most realistic results."

What do most people do wrong with self-tanners?

Always exfoliate and, if you need to, shave and do so at least four hours prior to applying self-tanning products to create a beautiful smooth skin canvas.

Additionally, many women apply self-tanner with their hands, but the palms of the hands are never an area that receives a natural tan. Always use a mitt to avoid having product developing in this area.

How to preserve your self-tan?

Maintain your tan by moisturizing twice daily and avoid shaving and waxing. Don't use shower gels or moisturizers that contain essential oils as these oils can strip the tan, reducing the length of time you get out of it. For an extra tan boost, a lotion with a gradual build tan effect is a great option to top up your colour after a few days.

I will be thinking about all of these self-tanning tips as I continue to expand my summer beauty regime. Your suggestions are always welcome as I continue on my journey to live life to the fullest. Let's have the very best 2016!

Here's Your Actual First Look At Harry Styles' New Short Haircut

$

Calling all Harry Style fans! The moment we've all been waiting for has finally arrived ... and we have so many emotions.

After dramatically chopping off his long locks and posting the evidence to his Instagram page for the world to see (and cry over), Styles emerged into the public eye a mere 96 hours later wearing a rather hideous hat to cleverly cover up the new, pony-less 'do.

Sadly, we were all left disappointed.

Itching to get a glimpse at the new Harry (and not the fake Snapchat one), fans watched the One Direction band member's every move and had their cameras ready to get the first pic of the 22-year-old and his new look.

It's been 11 days since the British heartthrob donated his tresses to the Little Princess Trust charity, and now we finally have our first clear photo of the haircut.

SO. SHORT.

Many are speculating the decision to cut his locks has to do with his new role in Christopher Nolan's new World War II film "Dunkirk," which will see Styles star alongside Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and Mark Rylance.

Now please, let us have this moment to heal because we're just not too sure how we're suppose to feel about this short 'do. Maybe we have to see it styled, maybe we have to see it grow at a rapid speed. All we know is that he looks young.

But if Harry's happy, we're happy.

Blake Lively Under Fire For 'L.A. Face With An Oakland Booty' Photo Caption

Blake Lively may be killing the style game at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, but she may want to rethink the photo captions she uses on her Instagram posts.

On Wednesday, the 28-year-old actress posted a split screen photo of herself from the "Cafe Society" premiere at Cannes, where she wore a curve-hugging, gold Versace gown. One photo showed the front of the dress, while the second showed the back, and Lively's derrière.

Hardly offensive, right? Wrong. The "Gossip Girl" star captioned the photo, "L.A. face with an Oakland booty," a line from "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-A-Lot, which, according to Urban Dictionary, "refers to a girl with a pretty face and a marvelous shapely ass."

Naturally, chaos ensued.

Twitter was quick to call out the pregnant mother-of-one for being racially insensitive, finding it to be problematic that the line came from a white, wealthy celebrity.

And Instagram users weren't too happy either.

"As if getting married on a slave plantation wasn't reason enough to hate her," one user commented on the photo, referring to Lively's wedding to Ryan Reynolds at Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens, an ex-slave plantation.

However, others were quick to jump to Blake's defense, saying those offended were being too "sensitive" to the song lyrics.

"You go girl!!! People are overly sensitive and need to get to work or a hobby but definitely a life. I've got an Oakland booty too even though I'm Hispanic is that allowed?" commented one user.

"People are so ridiculous... Taking a simple picture and caption completely out of context an making it a race issue. Why can't people just keep comments to themselves instead of trying to spread and validate their hatred. Shame shame...Blake, your gorgeous!!" wrote another.

It seems as though the "Savages" star isn't fazed, however, seeing as the photo (and caption) are still up.

As for Sir Mix-A-Lot, no word from him either.
