IKEA Goes Beyond Meatballs And Futons With Surprisingly Glam Product Line

When you hear the word "IKEA," you tend to think more budget-friendly basics, step-by-step instructions and maybe even your first couch. Glamour? Not so much. Until now that is.

ikea kitchen

Just this past weekend at the 2014 Interior Design Show in Canada, everyone's favorite Swedish brand finally took a turn away from its tried-and-true modern Scandinavian look and stepped toward chic kitchen chandeliers, an 18th-century France inspired chaise and (wait for it) gold-tiled bathroom walls.

And while we were just as surprised, we say good for them -- it's about time they got recognized for something other than BILLY bookshelves and in-store meatballs. Will we see this line in U.S. stores anytime soon? We hope so.

Paulina Gretzky Makes Small But Memorable Cameo In TaylorMade Commercial (VIDEO)

When Paulina Gretzky teased us with a peek at her forthcoming golf commercial, we had no idea what we were in for, until now!

On Thursday, TaylorMade Golf released their new "Speed Police" commercial featuring our favourite NHL heiress and we have to admit that it was worth the wait.

In the ad, we see a mini cop car wrecking havoc as it travels through a golf club and then on to the green where it slows down in front of Paulina, decked out in an Adidas mini skirt and tank top, who bends down and blows a kiss to the car. Rawr!

So, why was the Maxim cover girl in a golf commercial of all things? Well, Gretzky is engaged to golf pro Dustin Johnson, who has used TaylorMade equipment on tour for years and the 25-year-old is actually a golf fiend.

The blond bombshell is actually so good at the sport, that her dad admitted she could probably beat him in a round of golf (but not hockey, obviously).

If you get excited at the sight of snowflakes or love everything about pine cones and snowfalls, then a winter wedding might be right up your alley. If you still need some convincing, just take a look at some of these cakes.

Most winter wedding cakes or cupcakes stick to the basics: snowflakes, blue icing and a lot of sparkle. While we've seen coloured, wooden and even chocolate cakes, generally the idea around winter wedding dessert is to keep it classy — with white frosting. And as any other wedding cake, expect a lot of fondant.

This year, winter wedding cake trends point to all white creations with metallic accents and the use of silver beads or silver sugar, according to The Knot.

Below are 40 of our favourite wedding cake and cupcake ideas found on Pinterest. Share them with your planner, pin them to your own boards, or just drool over these cakes that look way too good to consume.

Take Your Style Cues From The Stars Who Made This Week's Best Dressed List

White was the color of choice for stars on this week's best-dressed list. Jessica Alba looked pretty in a lace dress, while Camilla Alves sparkled in a long, white gown.

Though many celebrities wowed us in the past couple of days, the gold star for style belongs to Rihanna who proved that she has the best fashion sense in the biz. Her striped look was the perfect mix of cool and casual.

Check out our picks for best-dressed and let us know what you think.

Jessica Alba in Ralph Lauren

alba

It's so nice to see a pretty white lace dress in the dead of winter.

Rihanna in Altuzarra

rih

So many elements came together to make this a perfect outfit. The two-tone herringbone stripes in Riri's loose fitting top are echoed in her midi length skirt. She is also showing just the right amount of skin with the high-slit and low-cut blouse, and her strappy shoes play nicely off the ties in her skirt. And don't even get us started on those beachy waves.

Camilla Alves

camilla

This sparkly white strapless gown looks phenomenal against Alves' olive skin and ombre hair.
Gwyneth Paltrow in David Koma

gp

Gwyneth would rock a neoprene cut-out dress. The interesting color and shape are perfect for the fashionable actress, and we love that she chose open-toe heels to elongate her legs.

Chrissy Teigen in Adeam

teigen

This ensemble is the perfect mix of sexy and sophisticated. The white blazer and pencil skirt make this a polished look, but the crop top, high-slit and tousled locks keep it young and fun.

Sandra Bullock in Roland Mouret

sandy

The "Gravity" actress found the perfect silhouette for her body. The simple lines on this black dress accentuate her a long and lean figure, and her dark red lipstick really pops against her fair complexion.

Sarah Hyland

sh

This is the Sarah Hyland we want to see more of! This color-blocking look is sleek and age-appropriate, and the jumpsuit is such a refreshing change on the red carpet.

Cate Blanchett in Givenchy

cate

Blanchett has been on a sartorial roll lately. This dress is exactly what we have come to know and love about her style: It's edgy yet incredibly elegant. The plunging neckline is balanced out nicely by the long hemline and loose fit of the gown.

Julianne Moore in Alexander McQueen

julianne

While Moore did make the worst-dressed list this week, she clearly found her footing again. Her black lace top and matching skirt are so pretty against her red hair, and the scalloped edges add a nice feminine touch.

The Stars Who Landed On This Week's Worst Dressed List Need New Stylists

$

On this week's worst-dressed list, many stars picked outfits with bad shapes. Camilla Alves hid her gorgeous figure in a toga-style gown, while Julianne Moore looked blah in a boxy black dress.

But the celeb who struggled the most was undoubtedly Katy Perry, who managed to make the worst-dressed list not once, but twice. The singer flopped in an overly sweet dress that looked more suitable for a 7-year-old going to Disney World, and she also raised some serious eyebrows in an awful cape-cum-dress number.

Check out our picks for worst-dressed of the week and let us know if you agree.

Katy Perry

katy cape

This floral dress with a matching cape is all kinds of hideous and would only be excusable if she's hiding a baby bump. And even then, might we suggest she take lessons from Ciara or Kerry Washington? If Perry is pregnant, we're really not looking forward to seeing her in oversized fabrics for the next nine months.

Katy Perry

perry

Clearly it was a rough week for the singer and this dress didn't make things any better. It looks like a figure skating outfit, which is just in time for the Winter Olympics?

Camilla Alves

camilla

The color is stunning on Mrs. McConaughey, but the dress has zero shape. It looks like the fabric was just draped over her body. A more defined waist could have done wonders for this ensemble.

Julianne Moore

moore

The top of Moore's dress is too boxy. The bold shoulders combined with the loose bodice are making her look much bigger than she is. Given all the excess fabric up top, it would have been nice if she had gone with a shorter hemline to break up all the black.

Diane Kruger

diane

This ensemble could easily have made the best-dressed list with a few minor tweaks. The pattern on the jumpsuit and the light blue pumps are adorable, but the sheer component on the sleeves is making the top wildly unflattering.

Selena Gomez

selena

The petite singer is literally drowning in this oversized white jumpsuit. The pants need to be tailored and there is also a poor fit around the armpit area.

Jessica White

js

Body chains should have faded out in the early aughts.

Emmy Rossum

emmy

This outfit is just so boring. The colors are washing Rossum out, the silhouette is aging her and her pulled-back hair and T-straps shoes are all wrong for the dress.

Zendaya Coleman

zendaya

Separately, these pieces could have been spectacular, but all together they're too much. The baggy metallic suit is overpowering on the petite singer. She also made the mistake of picking gold shoes and sunglasses with gradient lenses, both of which are competing with her already busy ensemble.

Anna Kendrick

kkkk

This either looks like a bad bridesmaid dress or a tacky prom dress. Either way, the cupcake silhouette and juvenile color are doing nothing for the actress. And the frock is begging for strappy shoes instead of the chunky black ones she chose.

Jordana Brewster Goes Braless In Sexy Sheer Dress (PHOTOS)

Jordana Brewster just couldn't resist showing off her fab figure on Thursday and hey, if we were her, we would do the same!

The "Fast & Furious" actress attended the Haney Pret-a-Couture Launch Party in L.A. wearing a slinky sheer dress that showed off maybe a bit more than she intended to.

The floor-length forest green frock featured a leather trim and an open back with spaghetti straps hanging on to a panel of sheer fabric. In other words, it was a hot dress!

But the "Dallas" star suffered a bit of a fashion mishap when it was clearly evident that she wasn't wearing a bra thanks to the thin fabric of her dress.

Not that the 33-year-old cared; the brunette beauty looked happy and it may have had to do with the fact that she's a new mom!

The Panama-born starlet announced last September that her son Julian had arrived via surrogate and the cute twosome were only first spotted together at the beginning of January.

Motherhood definitely becomes Jordana!

Fashion Critic Cathy Horyn Resigns From New York Times

Cathy Horyn, longtime fashion critic for the New York Times, has resigned from the publication just days before New York Fashion Week.

It's understood that the writer wants to take time away from her career for personal reasons. A memo (seen below) was sent to staffers at the Times and one of the newspaper's reporters confirmed the surprising news in a tweet:

Is an earworm your Waterloo (as in Abba's tune)? Study finds what helps people oust that tune

$

0

WASHINGTON - It happens to nearly everyone: A song — let's say Abba's "Waterloo" — is stuck in your head and just won't go away.

Now science has not one but three ways to dig that dreaded earworm out. And none of them are too surprising, as researchers surveyed 18,000 residents of Finland and England and reported their findings in the journal PLOS One.

Researchers at the University of London found that earworm victims say you can listen to the complete song or sing it; you can just not let it bother you, or you can try using another song to shove out the offending tune.

How about "God Save the Queen"?

"A tune that's not too catchy itself might do the trick," psychology researcher Lauren Stewart of the University of London said. The British national anthem, which Stewart concedes isn't the type to get stuck in the head, was mentioned most often by the Brits as an earworm replacement. Stewart wrote that 64 specific songs were mentioned as good replacement tunes, but not many repeaters. So the anthem topped the charts with six votes.

The other replacement tunes that got multiple votes include Culture Club's "Karma Chameleon" and the standard "Happy Birthday."

Most of the time the people who replaced one tune with another reported that the second tune did not become an earworm. About one-in-nine Britons reported they tried to distract themselves with another song. Most said it usually worked.

On the other hand, more than half the Finns surveyed were more likely to just try to embrace the song, play it over or listen to the end. And that also worked at times, Stewart said.

And then there's a third group who, like Stewart, just ignore earworms because they're not bothered by them.

About 90 per cent of people report earworms from time to time and Stewart said two things seem to be involved: lack of control and a brain that is sort of idling.

"People get very annoyed about being made to listen to music that they find is not to their personal taste and that they cannot control," Stewart said.

MARIN, Calif. - Court documents say the Northern California teenager convicted of stealing celebrity chef Guy Fieri's Lamborghini planned to commit a jewelry heist and sell the car.

A Marin County probation report released this week says Max Wade kept a binder with the values of items at the San Francisco jewelry store he planned to hit, along with names and photographs of its employees, and details about alarms and cameras.

According to the Marin Independent Journal (http://bit.ly/1eDgxOz ), the report also says investigators found a sales contract for the Lamborghini in a locker Wade kept. The contract indicated he planned to sell the car for more than $200,000 by shipping it to a dealership in the Dominican Republic.

Wade was also convicted of attempted murder for a 2012 drive-by shooting. He was sentenced to life in prison Jan. 23.

Miley Cyrus Rocks Canadian Tuxedo On 'The Tonight Show' (PHOTOS)

It seems as if Miley Cyrus is going through a radical style transformation- and we love it!

The singer, who sported crop tops, "Pretty Woman" boots and revealing jumpsuits in 2013 has been amping up her fashion game and her appearance on "The Tonight Show" on Thursday confirmed that.

The 21-year-old sported a double-denim ensemble aka. the Canadian Tuxedo, when she sat down with Jay Leno.

But it wasn't just any old jean outfit; it was Saint Laurent, dah-ling, and probably cost the "Wrecking Ball" singer a pretty penny.

Looking happy with her more mature look, Miley flaunted her platinum blond pixie, which she styled into a modern-day pompadour and wore very little makeup, the better to let her natural beauty shine through.

And it wouldn't be Miley if she didn't have some choice words for another pop star: Justin Bieber. The MTV Unplugged performer told the late-night talk show host what advice she would give the trouble Canadian singer:

“Uh ... I would just say, you know, you got a lot of money. Pay people to make sure you don’t get in trouble," she said. "And party at your house. Buy a house, and add a club to it!”

Miley's not the only one who loves the Canadian Tuxedo:

More states allow in-state college tuition for immigrant children living illegally in US

$
0
0

WASHINGTON - Giancarlo Tello paid $14,000 more than other New Jersey high school graduates to attend Rutgers University, the state's flagship public college.

Why the difference?

Tello spent much of his childhood in the U.S. without legal permission after his parents moved from Peru when he was 6.

That changes if he re-enrolls this fall, as he plans, thanks to a law recently signed by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie that provides in-state tuition to immigrants like him.

Supporters of immigrants' rights are energized because after years of contentious fights, New Jersey and three other states passed statutes last year that will allow such students who came to the U.S. when they were minors to pay in-state tuition.

Fifteen states now have such a statute, said Ann Morse of the National Conference of State Legislatures. In addition, university boards in Hawaii, Michigan and Rhode Island have granted these students in-state tuition. To qualify, high school graduates typically must meet requirements such as living in a state for a set number of years.

Florida, Indiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Mississippi, New Hampshire and Virginia have bills under consideration that would extend the in-state benefit, said Tanya Broder, a senior attorney with the National Immigration Law Center.

Supporters next plan to step up lobbying on a related issue: making these students eligible for state financial aid, including scholarships or grants. Already, California, New Mexico and Texas have laws spelling out this right, and it is under consideration in states such as Washington.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., filed a bill in Congress that would provide money to states that offer in-state tuition or financial aid to these students.

"It's an economic issue, and it's an issue of fairness," Murray said.

In this time of financial austerity, the bill faces a difficult road.

The students are known as "Dreamers" — from the shorthand for legislation stymied in Congress that provides a way for them to permanently remain in the U.S. The measure's full title is the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act (DREAM Act).

Lacking legal immigration status, the students typically aren't eligible for federal financial aid and many other aid programs.

But in many cases they are able to remain in the United States under President Barack Obama's 2012 "deferred action" program. That allows immigrants brought into the United States without legal permission as children by their parents to obtain temporary resident status for two years. The status is renewable.

Tello and Yves Gomes, 21, who was brought to the U.S. from India as a toddler, signed up.

Gomes attends the University of Maryland and pays in-state tuition, which he had lobbied for. But he says in some cases that isn't enough. He called for state and other financial aid, especially for those who don't qualify for Maryland's in-state tuition benefit.

Tuition and fees for Maryland residents come to about $9,000 this academic year, compared with more than $28,000 for those from other states. That doesn't include thousands more in room and board.

"I met so many friends who are off and on in school just because they have to take time off to help their families put food on the table. You have to survive," Gomes said.

The issue of what educational benefits should be available to immigrants living illegally in the country has been contentious. Critics say helping the students encourages unlawful behaviour and means they potentially take someone else's seat at taxpayers' expense.

"I don't understand why they would take taxpayer dollars that could be going to U.S. citizens and instead subsidizing the education of noncitizens who could also be deported," said Kris Kobach, the Republican secretary of state in Kansas who has litigated immigration-related cases. "Why would you subsidize a workforce that may not be there tomorrow?"

Kansas passed a law in 2004 that granted the in-state tuition benefit to students living in the country illegally.

Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, South Carolina and Indiana bar the in-state benefit altogether, according to the National Conference of State Legislators. In Wisconsin, in-state tuition was authorized in 2009, but later repealed.

Politicians have taken heat on both sides.

In the 2012 Republican presidential primary, Texas Gov. Rick Perry ended up apologizing after saying critics of in-state tuition for students in the country illegally "did not have a heart." In last year's gubernatorial race in Virginia, GOP Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli was dogged during his unsuccessful campaign by a vote opposing the in-state tuition benefit earlier in his career.

Christie agreed to sign the New Jersey bill only after issuing a conditional veto that took out the financial aid component.

"It definitely felt great that now a lot of 'dreamers' in New Jersey, including myself, will be able to return to school, but at the same time it feels like we were lied to by Gov. Christie, who when he was campaigning, said he was going to give full equality to the Latino community," Tello said.

He was campaign manager for the New Jersey Tuition Equity for Dreamers, and said he dropped out of college after attending part-time for three semesters because of the cost. Out-of-state tuition at Rutgers is about $24,700 compared with about $10,700 for an in-state student. Full-time students also pay nearly $3,000 in fees, in addition to room and board.

On the day he signed the bill, Christie explained his decision this way: "This is what compromise looks like." Christie said the important thing is that these students will now have an "affordable" way to continue their education.

About 65,000 students living illegally in the country graduate annually from high school and about 5 per cent to 10 per cent of them go to college, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities has estimated.

Daniel Hurley, an official with the association, said even when these students are able to get a college degree, their future work prospects are limited.

"They are caught in the limbo," Hurley said. "It's certainly frustrating to see."

The '90s Just For Me Hair Relaxer Commercial Song Is Stuck In Our Heads (VIDEO)

When I was just a child and my mother grew tired of straightening my thick, coarse curls at home, she took me to the salon for a chemical hair relaxer. As scary as it may sound, I actually looked forward to getting out of my stylist's chair with sleeker and softer locks. And I have this hair commercial to thank for calming my nerves.

Back in the '90s, the Just for Me hair relaxer was one of the most popular straightening treatments for African-American girls. It's no-lye formula offered a gentler alternative, especially for kids with sensitive scalps. But what really sold this hair relaxer, in my opinion, was the catchy commercial song.

The lyrics were simple yet sassy -- I can still rap them without missing a beat. "I want style, body and shine. A look that's totally all mine. Hair so soft, silky and free. I want something just for me. Just for meeee!"

With three cute girls (one of which was former Destiny's Child member LaTavia Roberson) sporting enviable hairdos as they sang and danced in the commercial, my mom didn't have to do too much begging for me to make a hair appointment.

But I'd be changing my tune years later when I decided to go natural like these stars:
